Yeap certainly kudos to the volunteers as well... Cos some of the home conditions are very bad... Washing toilet stained by decades of neglect, clearing out mites, dirt and dust etc... :salute:
Yeah I actually also :salute: the volunteers who went to the house to help them neaten up. It takes alot of effort and energy and certainly a compassionate heart to do that within a day's work.
For me... I get irritable nose and will itch all over whenever I get hot and sticky in a dustry environment... hahaha perfect excuse to stay away from spring cleaning LOL -
BlurBee:
For me, I acknowledge that I cannot help them all the time... Having said that, I also look at how bad their condition is, some of the people walking ard to sell tissues have a lost limb or blind etc... Most of them sell tissues for 3 pkt/dollar, there have been times that I give them $2 w/o taking their tissues or I give them a dollar for 1 pkt of tissue... There have also been times when I politely reject them.1 qn for those gold-hearted people.
If you see an old man/lady selling something (eg packets of tissue papers) everyday (pls note, its everyday), will you help buying from them everytime?
I guess what I do is a function of how I am feeling that day etc... But for those people that are rude and persistent and some even \"insist\" that you get from them and tell their sob story to gain sympathy  ... I usually wouldnt bulge.
Hmmm... By responding I am not acknowledging that I am gold-hearted lar... I have my moods and emotions too... Just that I am fairly observant of my environment and these are the things I notice and pick up. So to me, if I am in the position to do a little something at that moment, I just tell myself to do it. -

For me, never.1 qn for those gold-hearted people.

There are more than enough self-help groups in SG to help everyone who needs help, to make ends meet. As someone who has worked in a welfare organisation, and has encountered all kinds of \"poor\" people, I can tell u, 90% of all those selling tissue paper, have reasons why they do not go to welfare organisations for help.
Common reasons:
1) Pride. They rather haress passers-by than go to seek welfare. I've met more than a few rude tissue sellers, one of whom refused to give me back the change. What's the difference from robbing? 20 cents worth of tissue selling for $2? Why not just rob me? Strangely, they don't feel shameful doing all these, compared to going to seek welfare. They justify selling overpriced tissue as \"genuine work\".
2) They do not meet the criteria of welfare organisations. Many of them have rich children, who do not support them. The solution is to get the children to support their aged/sick parents, if necessary, bring them to court. Selling tissue is not a way to solve the prob.
3) Welfare organisation would not help them because they refuse to go to welfare. Why? A common reason is they're in need because a lot of their money goes towards drug-dependent/gambler children, and welfare is often reluctant to give them money to fund their children's \"CCA\"s lol
4) Amazingly, laziness. Going to welfare often needs to fill up many forms, dig up bank/employment records, go for interviews....they find it \"troublesome\" LOL I've met more than a few \"poor people\" who told me it's too troublesome to get welfare
There are old/sick/poor people supporting themselves working as toilet cleaners, at least it's an honest living, compared with these robbers. Yes, they are nothing more than pity-extortionists. They get your pity, then use it to extort u for money. I would give a toilet cleaner a tip anytime than buy a tissue from these people. -

Skunk,
1) whats wrong with having some pride? In fact, my admiration goes out to these ppl who try to continue making a living rather than living off welfare.
2) Not everyone insists that their children support them. Besides, how do you force the kids to do that? And for a lot of these old folkies, they will tell you that their children are having a hard time raising their own families to even give them anymore allowance.
3) ppl who have had little education find it difficult to navigate their way round the systems. Please have a heart. -
kaitlynangelica:
1) The eventual aim of welfare is to promote a certain level of self-subsistence. Welfare bodies will usually render immediate help, such as money/provisions, and then administer long-term help, such as finding a job, finding subsidised housing, etc. Those totally unable to work and family is totally unable to support, will be given help permanently. These tissue sellers are not making a living, they are extorting/exploiting sympathy. Mis-directed sympathy will harm them more, not help them. Can you imagine their money going to fund more drugs/gambling?

2) For those whose families are unable to support them, all the more they should go to welfare. Their own children are likely to need welfare too. The organisation i worked with, in fact, worked with various families for as long as 3 generations!! Their problems go far back the family line. We had a family with alcoholic grandma, alcoholic dad and mentally unstable kid
Selling tissue wouldn't have helped them, in fact it would make them worse. They need therapy, not mis-directed sympathy.
3) Social workers are there to help those who are lost in Singapore's rapid development. Please direct the little-educated to a welfare organisation, not ask them sell tissue paper. Can direct them to me too. Yes, my heart is very hard. U need a hard heart to change the world. Mis-directed sympathy only damages more. -
Thank you for all the replys.
Have any of you heard of this old lady 许哲居士?
She always says, “我只是一个会扫地,喜欢做工的女人。我来到这个世界没有别的责任,就是爱,时时刻刻都去爱人。只要我们的心中有爱,这个世界就是一个爱的世界。”
