How to tell if a child is gifted?

You see, I believe that because they are gifted, they can still thrive in EL or CL (if they lack in either one or any of the the lang skills) when they are given the opportunity, no matter when. They will pick it up by listening, interacting and thru exposure to reading, and v quickly too. Thats the edge they have compared to the others.

Yes, a gifted child must be exposed to stimulus where his giftedness is given the opportunity to develope, but it doesn't always have to start in the academic or in a specific lang area . And a gifted child can only be identified young if the parents are aware what signs to look out for.

Ultimately, the attainment of lifeskills should complement the need to further nurture a child who has been identified/thought of as gifted.

hi, I had been reading this thread but never posted something before…


I have a girl born in 2005, she was reads at 2 for english ( she can use phonics to pronon any words, reads very fast and write well and also can spells well too.

she reads all type of book like… animals, cooking, space, country, geograpy, science …

and chinese (she can use hanyu pinyi to read any words and also can write as 2.5 .as today I also quite blur how she managed to learn Hanyu pinyi at 2.5 . One day i give her a chinese book , she just read it loudly to me .

maths – know 1 to 100 at 2.5

physical can fix 60+ puzzles at 2.5 and balancing and high jump all very good

she has good memory.

but one thing she is very sensitive child… cries over sad story, sad songs and cries over pets dead.

she has learned all the things at home , no enrichment course.

Is she gifted child ?

now she is 4+

Hi,
I am no expert. But if this is absolutely what she is doing. Then, you might want to get her IQ tested as early as possible so that she can get some intervention if required.

Key is, how gifted are the rest of the family members, especially hubby and you? Sorry, you don't have to answer my question, but just have that answer in your mind. The IQ of a child is within 10% of the parents normally, but not always.

This year 5, next year 6 should be K2. Are you skipping 1yr? P1 should be 7.

as your question my husband and I is just a lower class people. We are just holding our diploma level only.
and the rest of the family some don even studies secondary sch.

So far I have not thinking of IQ tested, because our financially can effort to spend… IQ tested also not cheap in singapore.

the thing I can do is explode her at home… get her a lot of material to read with no cost.

She also quite talent in music . now she can do her own music rap songs.
but is a funny one

Please do not think diploma level means \"lower class\". I know of many high IQ people who have not got higher qualification, think of our ancestors who did not have the opportunity to get formal education.

Just continue to enrich her and I am sure she will be doing really well.

I agree with wiimum. I am sad to see the word \"lower class\". I am teaching at diploma level now, and I know some students who are extremely smart, but they don't do well in exams, either because they are addicted to computer games, or they simply lack the motivation.

There is no need, and no point to have your girl tested. Just believe in your instincts.

Remember that what defines giftedness, is not how much the child already knows. It is how quickly and easily she can learn new things on her own, without the need to be taught. A gifted child only needs resources, not teachers.

Also, it really does not matter how much a child knows at a very young age. What really matters is how much that child can contribute to society when he grows up. So long as we have provided the right resources to the child that suits her abilities, then we have done our parts as parents.
