2014 P1 Registration Exercise for 2015 In-Take

Understandably parents want the best odds and everyone is binded to the rules set out by MOE but come on, you can’t be so wishy-washy and want the best of both worlds and flip at the critical last hour. No wonder with such character, it creates all these tensions and parents having to "camp" outside schools on final day to monitor and govt to say "All schools are good schools". It is easy for those who are not affected by these last minute people to say good luck, game rule is fair and parents should know high ballot chance for popular schools etc. But if you are one of those who have to go through this torturous wait instead of celebrating this weekend and having the worst thought of being the unlucky one as well those 17 whom these 4 have just blew their long-awaited 2C away just because they had to wait till the last hour? Couldn’t they have roughly already knew their chance earlier and spared a thought for other parents of how their one selfish act can negatively impact the lives of so many parents and kids?

Hope 2015 registrants be more thoughtful and decisive early.

The 17 affected parents in Ai Tong ought to write in, explain yr plight.

So whAt time did these 4 extra actually turn up, throwing everything off course, without any time to respond to crisis ?

The rule says closing time 4.30pm, means closing time is 4.30pm. If they step in before 4.30pm, the school will accept them as per normal. As much I empathise the plight of the affected parents, it's a risk they (and everyone else) need to accept when applying for a school > 1km.

You have been encouraging people to wait and see, and apply for a more popular school if there's no balloting or the chances are greater than the one they are enrolled in. Maybe the 4 parents heed your advice?

If we look at it objectively, those 4 parents played the game by the rules. By reading the last few pages, one would have thought that they registered after 4.30pm! They did register before 4.30pm. The ball was in their court since they were within 1km. If you put yourselves in their shoes, I believe most of us would do what they did for the best chance at Aitong or any popular school.


They merely leveraged on the advantage they had, which is what everybody else is doing at various phases. What they did was completely legitimate.

If parents within 1km registered early, they are being kind and nice to those outside 2km - they allow them to gauge the numbers, but it’s no fault of theirs if they choose to register at 4.25pm.

Those outside 2km should already have gone in with their eyes open. The historical stats for popular schools are everywhere. Even if they are not available, as long as you have lived in Singapore for a couple of years, it doesn’t take a genius to realise that popular schools are really ‘popular’.

I thought it would be nice if withdrawal for confirmed seats is not allowed (altho it cuts both ways), and if there are days allocated for the different distances as suggested above. But still, I think there would still be unhappiness in the end lah.

As a parent, we will do our utmost best for our children given our best knowledge, circumstance and pressure we faced at the point decision is made. Having said that, we also cannot be 100% sure win and there are things beyond our control. While I empathised with those 17 parents 1 - 2km registered with AT, the last min registrants are not wrong too. They are parents and would like to do the utmost best for their children. Moreover, they complied with the rules.

No system is perfect in this world and we just have to accept the outcome esp we know we have done our best for our children. I also want to get a preferred school.for my children (btw, I m gg to ballot next wed). I just tell myself, this is just P1 registration only. Long way to go and there would be more other issues for us parent to worry as our children grow. Not the end of the world if we did not get the preferred school.

You did not read my post properly. Parents can withdraw their applications in the first 2 days. But they should only be allowed to withdraw from oversubscribed schools on the 3rd day.

Quite tough also. Even one vacancy also is 'undersubscribed'. What if 10 withdrew from AT and try to register for GY only to find that they still need to ballot....

They can't, cos everyone is calculating their chances of enrolling into their favourite school up till the last minute.

Unless there's a \"cooling period\" as suggested by ChiefKiasu. There will always be lots of last minute withdrawal/registrations. It's part of the equation that parents enrolling into all popular schools (and we all know who they are) have to take into consideration.

P/S: If the comments are true, registering at 3pm isn't 'last minute'. With 17 parents fighting for 4 seats, I would have done the withdrawal and head to another school to avoid ballot or give myself a better chance. However, given that they are prepared to enrolled and stayed on for the fight, they would have been prepared for whatever outcome.

Guangyang has not balloted in the last... gazillion?... years.
CHS and ATS have always balloted <1km in P2C.
KCPPS usually around 1-2km or >2km in P2C.

Besides, there are other good schools around which don't need to ballot or ballot >2km around the vicinity in Toa Payoh / Ang Mo Kio (eg. Marymount Convent). Most parents 1-2km of Ai Tong should be eligible for them as well.

Exactly! Noone can predict what the next person will do...just look at the KSP live commentaries and people dispensing all sorts of advices!

Yes. If the kid is smart and bright, he/she will sure excel in any school. We parent just want to do our best to give them a good start. Just to share: My colleague’s sister was from a normal neighbourhood school. She did well in PSLE and went into Nanyang Girls. She did so well that she is a harvard graduate. Family not very well to do, her education fee was supported by bursary and sponsorship. See She can do so well without a good environment to start with too.

In fact nicnac, they need not cry foul cos the current system already benefit those who are staying less than 1 km first then followed by 1-2km… don’t forget under 2c phase SC home proximity is the only determinant for placement provided there’s no oversubscription for those staying under 1km.
