I am no expert. But if this is absolutely what she is doing. Then, you might want to get her IQ tested as early as possible so that she can get some intervention if required.

Just curious, what sort of intervention?

Start school earlier, skip grades, IEP, dual enrollment, subject escalation. A lot more lah...

If the child is truly exceptionally gifted, give him an earlier start can be good. Many bored kids develop behavioral problems.

I will only call someone a genius, after he/she has developed something that will truly benefit all of mankind.

I find it strange for anyone to call a child a genius. Giftedness does not mean genius. It just means that a child has the ability to learn new things much faster than others, and they do so effortlessly. Yes it does not apply to all things.
I like that definition. How fast you learn and not what you already know. Genius has many different definitions, some go by statistics and others by what they have achieved.

To me, a genius is someone who contributes to the world, too. I agree. What's the point of being a genius and invent a walking toothbrush? What's the use? I share Tamarind's definition of genius. But again, there are just too many definitions out there. If anyone wants to call your child a genius, by all means! Then give it your own definition! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Please do not think diploma level means \"lower class\". I know of many high IQ people who have not got higher qualification, think of our ancestors who did not have the opportunity to get formal education.

Just continue to enrich her and I am sure she will be doing really well.
Yep, why is Poly 'lower class'? Less education means less gifted? Education to some extent measures opportunity. Giftedness measures what God has given. At least that's what it is to me.

So, you don't know your IQ, not that it is low. Let me explore this: Go to the polyclinic and ask them for a referral to Child Guidance Clinic at IMH. Perhaps you can get the IQ test done. Call IMH first to see if this route is possible. That way, the test will be subsidized.

Again, I will only do this if I am at least 99.9% sure my kid is way above average on the brains department. Way above means the #1 in the year he/she is born. Otherwise, that piece of paper is useless. MOE won't use it.

Even through polyclinic, after subsidy it cost $500. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Remember that what defines giftedness, is not how much the child already knows. It is how quickly and easily she can learn new things on her own, without the need to be taught. A gifted child only needs resources, not teachers.
I remember posting somewhere in one of the threads here that gifted kids need no teaching but need exposure. Not even reading, there is no need to teach reading either, they just pick it up on their own as they absorb. It sounds amazing but that is their inert ability.

Now, maybe inflation and fees has escalated. In my opinion, I do not think it is necessary to do go for such a test if the child is a normal child. From what I know, MOE will not allow the kids to \"jump\" class until P3 when the GEP screening starts.

Btw, I probably belongs to the less unfortunate parent because my daughter was a case of asperges syndrome and not that she was very talented in something and it was KK who wanted to test her IQ and not I suggested for it. I was only trying to get KK's help to diagnose what was the problem with my girl. Ironically, there wasn't a score allocated because she got 2 areas very high and 2 areas below or just on the average. I was told that she needed to score a consistent score for the areas that she was being tested in order to allocate a score to her. Anyway, I wasn't interested about all these because this wasn't my priority. I only wanted to solve my girl's problem.

I feel that it is not important for alll these assessment. Most important they must enjoy the school life.

I believe 2ppaamm is speaking from her experience of an exceptional case. Most cases I believe do not warrant such a test because they are likely above average but not exceptional enough. In cases where they are exceptional, I believe there is special help that can be rendered to help them develop themselves better since they are not on the normal curve. I also think MOE are keen in such cases only.

How true! So is your child going through intervention for Asperger's?

Yes, from my knowledge, ks2me is right. Like I mentioned, unless your child is 3 in 100,000, which means the FSIQ is 145 and above, MOE will do nothing. Note: there are less than 50,000 babies in a year.

Yes, you can get support from MOE much earlier than P3, only if you fit that category. Very few people do. Some may not even want the support, if you have the family structure to do that. Point is, MOE needs the school to support the child, so if the child's school cannot provide that, it will be very difficult.

But don't worry about all these lah. Just as long as the kid is fine and happy. If you don't think he/she is in that 1 in a year kind, then just go on with life and provide the stimulation you can lor... life goes on.
