Recently our Piano Teacher recommended that we shd get the grade 1 exam pieces book. and we did. I discovered that the CD comes with all the 18 pieces for the exam syllabus but the book only has 9?

Exam book comes with three section A, B and C. Each section comprises of 3 pcs with 3 additional alternatives pcs (not in the exam book) to provide wider choices for exam. However, the alternative pcs score will have to buy separately.

The others, ie. No. 4-6 are the alternative pieces, which are typically chosen less frequently. The first page in the book contain a list of all the pieces, and their publication. The alternative pieces are available in places like Yamaha, Gramercy, etc.

ABRSM also publishes a book Teacher's Choices, which contains a selection of alternative pieces. It doesn't contain all, but usually have 2 alternative pieces per group.

I do not know why they don't publish a book with all the pieces. Perhaps it's to lower the cost of the basic book, with additional opportunity to earn extra revenue from people who want more choices?

I am curious again. Are the alternative pieces more difficult?

I was looking at the book and listening to the cd. If I were to choose a piece from each list, two of which would have been under the alternative pieces.

I don't think the alternative pieces are more difficult. They just give you more choices in terms of finding a piece that matches the character of the child. At times, it's difficult to find a piece amongst the 3 main pieces in a group, because of finger span, and need for pedal, especially for a young child. Hence the alternative pieces gives more choices.

I am not sure if it's due to coincidence or not, but across all the grades, my daughter's alternative pieces scores the highest amongst the 3 pieces, in each exam. Maybe the examiners get bored listening to the main exam pieces day in day out... so it's more refreshing to hear something different

Teachers' Choice is actually not released by ABRSM, but rather published locally by Josephine Koh. There was issue with students not being able to use it for the exam, but seem like now it's okay ever since she paid the copyright fee to ABRSM.

Besides sounding refreshing, examiners won't have a copy of the alternative pieces, so they will just listen while marking them. Which is good if there are significant modifications done to the scores.
