Dagong99, may I ask if your DS1 has enjoyed his time in NUSH so far? Will MS kids have problem coping in the school?

Hello! I'm not dagong, but I thought that there's something that I can share.

I am one of those MS kids. I hadn't seen any issue specific to MS kids in my past few years.

To be more specific though, NUSH would be great for all that have the aptitude and attitude for maths and science. GEP selection, while it does consider analytical skills, also considers language skills in its assessment (some of us aren't really good in langauges :P). I feel (and I think the school feels too) that it is thus not a fair gauge of one's maths and science passion. We can also see that NUSH does not really favour GEP kids as opposed to MS kids in its selection process. The school believes that everyone selected has an equal potential to excel in NUSH, GEP or not.

Yes, DS1 who is from MS, definitely enjoys his school, though his weakest subjects are the languages.

The school does not differentiate the students between GEP & MS and in the advance years (year 3 & 4), they are grouped together based on their subject combinations.

One thing to highlight though, triple Science starts from year 1. 😉
Even in year 1, they group GEP and MS together.

          Hi,

Are they supposed to wear their own clothes for the preview session ?

          Thanks!

The email mentioned casual and neat, so I suppose we can wear our own clothes and if it is still the same as previous years, the kids will be asked to change their \"top\" into the school formal wear with tie for photo taking (for making student pass).

          . 😉

The tentative photo taking is at around 22 Dec Matriculation day. By then your child will need to wear Nush school uniform.

I think I mixed up DSA School Preview with Matriculation Day. Photo taking is done on Matriculation Day instead of DSA School Preview.

There is no distinction needed in NUSH for MS vs GEP. Those who are selected are all, in the school’s eyes, gifted in Math and/or Science.

At an olympiad finals, my GEPper met a MSer from a neighbourhood school who impressed him so much with his knowledge of electrical circuits and the two of them bonded over geektalk. My kid thought the MSer was smarter than any of his schoolmates and even himself. This MSer may not have been selected for GEP but this doesnt make him any less gifted than kids in GEP or any less brilliant than the 270/280 PSLE scorers. This is where NUSH’s selection process comes in, to spot such bright sparks.

NUSH is like what they have in the US, a gifted/talented school for the math-science inclined. Just because someone was not selected for GEP in P3 does not mean he is not gifted (GEP does not test science, and language holds weight in that test). So MSers need to have more self-belief. This is a school that believes it can develop the child it selects.

The plans ahead: do schedule in your holiday plans around 22 December.

Your child will meet their respective mentor (form teacher) and class mates on Matriculation Day.

Also, Do bring cash and your spouse to help carry the books
