anyone know the significance of giving $5 hongbao?

In chinese angbao, it usually in even number. Itβs odd to have odd number.
Try to recall did you visit any Malay-Chinese family. I think they do give in odd number. -

Guess it's cos of the convenience as we have $5 currency and they don't know the significant of giving in odd number. I was shocked when I first received them also but I know that the giver means no malice.

me too β¦ I was taught not to give odd numbers.

Can give $5 angbao. This is especially so for hokkien. cos 5 is wu in hokkien means have. so 5 means you have good fortune.

Hong Kongers and some traditonal cantonese here will give two angpows to one kid. They believe everything must be in even, cheng shuan cheng dui

:? The giver of this ang pow is Cantonese! I think it's probably convenience...or poor auntie wanted to put 2 pieces and forgot!

No lei, I was taught by my granny that we cantonese give 2 cos it represents one from the husband and the other from the wife. The amount in each packet must be even. If one becomes a widow or widower, then give one. DH family is Hokkien and they give only 1 so I combine the amount and give 1 instead of 2 packets.Hong Kongers and some traditonal cantonese here will give two angpows to one kid. I also have no qualms abt giving $5 except that since we usually change to $2 notes, we donβt. When I 1st got married, even $10 is consider odd, which I guess is why some couple give $12.
