Most travel brochures bring tourists to only 2 hells (blue and crimson).
A visit to each hell is 400yen. I intend to visit these 2 hells. Worth it?
Besides the hells, any other sight-seeings? I will be based at Hakata and make a day trip to Beppu.
Thanks. -

Thanks.[/quote]We visited more than 2 hells, but can't remember if we saw all eight. But definitely those 2 are the nicest. I was there some 15 years ago so memory is a little vague :scratchhead:
While in Beppu, you must visit an outdoor onsen! We were there in spring and so soaking in the onsen was wonderful. I love outdoor onsens! :please: -
Dnls_mum,
I like onsens but can’t soak inside because too hot for me!
Still planning my itinerary as we will be based at Hakata for a few days, making a day trip to Nagasaki and possibly Beppu.
BTW, have you tried temple lodging at Koyansan? If so, which temple did you stay or recommend?
Thank you. -

Just curious, why is it named the 8 hells?

They are hot springs more for viewing than bathing.

The way to soak in onsen is to soak for 5mins then get out, sit at the side, then go in again. You do this multiple times. This is especially for the high temp ones like the ones in beppu. If u do this during cool weather, it feels really good and keeps u warm for hours after your soakDnls_mum,

Sorry, did not stay in temples so can't help you there.
A visit to Nagasaki will be to see the atomic bomb museum and to visit the peace park. Worth a visit if u have not visited the museum at Hiroshima. -
Hi Dnls_mum
I can’t enter into the hot water completely. It is just too hot for me. At home, I always bathe with normal water.
Yes, we will be making a day trip to Nagasaki to visit the Peace Park.
Have you been to Huis Ten Bosch? Worth going?
Any other recommended places to visit in Kyushu as we will be there for a few day?
BTW, did you use JR pass and did you buy it from JTB? Please pm me if not convenient to share.
Thank you. -

Yes, we visited Huis Ten Borsh. It is like visiting holland. Very European theme park with a replica of the palace in Netherlands and it's gardens. Quite nice. Lots of photo ops. We have seen the original palace in Netherlands too. We went in spring so the park was filled with tulips which were beautiful. But unless you have time to kill, I won't recommend. It is so unJapan. All the things they sell there can be found in Netherlands. So it is good for people who have not visited Netherlands. The shows are all in Jap, so can see, but don't understand. All the staff are dressed in typical Dutch costumes.Hi Dnls_mum

Other places we visited included Mt Aso, Kumamoto castle, suizenji garden , Dazaifu. I love the sweet red bean mochi cake that is slighted toasted that they sell at the restaurant inside Dazaifu, yum yum. Never found another that tasted as good. :please:
