Hello Tamarind,


Hahaha! Same question as Pokemon. How do you know whether a book is good when there is no sample pictures (unlike amazon).

Can share? :clubmyself: I am very blur in chinese reading.

Actually there are lots of reviews, as well as pictures of the pages for most books.

For example :

I look for the total number of reviews. 不一样的卡梅拉 has 16414 reviews, and the overall rating is 5 stars. So it must be good

I buy all the books that have hundreds or thousands of good reviews. I always read the reviews to find out whether the books are worth buying.

Parents who are not able to understand the reviews, can always check out my recommendations in my blog.

As for whether it is suitable for P1, note that our P1 Chinese standard is very low compared to China. I bought many books in the 3 - 6 age group : http://book.dangdang.com/children/3-6, I think many of our P1 kids will find the words in these books very challenging.

If the books are too difficult, I just keep them until my kids are older.

You can also look for books for age 7 - 10 :

But note that kids at this age are already reading long novels in China.

It is a matter of exposure. They start to teach their kids to recognize Chinese characters from 2 to 3 years old, or may be younger. So by the time the child is 5 or 6, he/she would be able to read books with many Chinese characters.

My girl, who will be 7 years old next month, is also able read books like that very fluently on her own. We do not speak Mandarin at home at all. I also did not spend many hours teaching her Chinese, she spends less than 15 minutes a day reading Chinese books (no hanyu pinyin) since 4 years old.

I believe that Singaporean kids can be as good in Chinese as China kids, if we adopt the same resources and methods, and start very early

I tried to read with him again, mah - but he's bored with all the repetitions. So it's been used like 1.5x.
