Starting on comprehension today. Will focus on this for these 2 weeks. And then back to normal revision schedule once school hols start. Gonna hear his whining all the way from your place, Janet.

      bb mom,
I told mine here, once she gets the hang of comprehension, it will not be difficult. in fact, the questions now are no longer like before. the format is different.
planned schedule up till 1 dec...in fact, I planned up till mid dec but didn't print it out or you will hear whining too  there is no longer exam stress now...just getting daily work done and stay in the loop.

        Hi to All,

My DD will be P6 next year and we are worried for her English. We are looking for a good tutor or enrichment centre here in West area. Any recommendations is highly appreciated. Thanks.

There is express or ip stress and express or normal stress.

Any idea what kind of 4-subj average these kids who eventually end up in NA/NT were getting in school for P5/6?

If all subjects between 50 to 60 marks lor...

Mine has been averaging 60% for English & Math. Only Science he's getting 80s.

Math is all about practice, practice and more practice!

But before practice, must make sure he can understand the concepts and tools (heuristic?).
I mostly rely on two books, Onsponge and Ammiel Wan. They have quite good range of worked examples. (But the Onsponge PSLE Practice Papers has too many mistakes).

For heuristic, stick to one author...they are all the same but given different names which may confuse the kids.

Dec holidays is a good time to review the SA2 paper and list down the areas that need improvement.
Donch attempt the assessment books but rather, look at the answers and workings at the back and see if the kid can understand. It is important for weak students to learn how to solve the problem first and then see if he can repeat it some other time.

Basically, it is just like 听写。。。if you donch prepare, you will find it hard to do well...and just like 听写, chances is that you will forget it the next week...so got to practice and practice and drill and drill until it becomes second nature!

Ammiel Wan is my favourite.. getting Sonny to do their maths problems this coming holidays.. need to warm up his engine again..

I know Math is one area that can be worked on to improve results. We've actually been using Math456, Getmethinking and Ammiel Wan's books. Models are ok for him. It's when it involves both quantities & value that he gets confused. He's still struggling with percentages. And then there's average and geometry...Too many topics! As it is, it took me a while to get him to \"see\" how to solve area/perimeter of composite figures.

Need to master unit method as well. Can solve the question within 2 to 3 minutes..
My boy hates models so I teach him the unit method..

Mine didn't draw proper models...sometimes just scribbled some letters, sometimes drew some lines...it was all in his mind...as long as he can get the answer (not TheAnswer), I left it to him.

My girl tried to do without but make too many mistakes...missing a info here and there => getting the wrong answers!! So have to insist on drawing proper models....tedious but at least better chance of getting it right!

She also used to mess up Diameter and Radius and so I made her write down D = nn or r = nn so that when she substitute into formula such as 2(pi)r, she will not put in the wrong value. Again, an extra step but worth it!

mine does not use models unless forced by the school teacher.. he solves heuristic problems via unit method..

DD will draw without labelling the models and along the way get confused and end up with the wrong answer. I am quite hands off with her these days so not very sure what is her preferred method. Saw in her latest practise papers a mixture of models, algebra and unit method.

DS does not draw any model. He does not write anything in the space given, no scribblings, no workings, nothing except the answer. In the process of doing, he will stare into space, almost like he is day dreaming, while twirling his pencil or eraser, then suddenly, he will put the answer down. 8-9 times out of 10 the answer is correct. When I tried to get him to explain to me how he got the answer, I get confused. 😓 So I leave him be.

I thought you :siam: far far liao!! How come still around?

My girl was like that...trying to emulate the bro by not having any workings...but end up losing unnecessary marks. Working is a must coz I understand they will give method marks or something like that

Actually, if your kid can do most of the Math homework by themselves, doing well in PSLE is all about practice++ and drill++...being systematic, meticulous...no shortcuts!!

DS is not systematic, not meticulous and constantly looking for shortcuts! Die!

I went into meltdown an hour ago when DS told me his results for English and Math. Just passed only. Did much better for his Math Paper 1 but failed Paper 2. I was on the verge of giving up cos it feels like we’re both wasting time and effort. After I calmed down, while he was having his shower, I gave myself a mental pep talk followed by giving him a pep talk.

He knows his target and what he has to do to achieve it. He can actually complete my sentences as I’m talking. That’s how often I’ve said them to him. Now, it’s time for action…I just fear (greatly) that he still can’t make it. There’s less than a year to go before PLSE and so much ground to recover. I worry that he’ll fail PSLE!
