Hi,

My dd will join PHP next year (P3). How do we know if your child will be taking HCL? Can we opt out?
PHPPS is a SAP school, every student from P1 to P4 will take HCL, only in P5 and P6, you can opt out.

Hi Fiona2004... let me help you with your question.

my dd is P5 this year and she is in HCL C1... less than 40 students....if i am not wrong, only 1 distinction in her class....consider very good in writing if you can get close to 30 marks out of 40....and the rest 60 marks are not easy to score too.....there are some failures too....there are 7 HCL classes... ie HCL 1 to 7 and 6 CL classes ....ie CL 8 to 13

if the kid doesn't opt for HCL, then he/she will not be put into 9/8/7/6/5......the top classes are filled up with those taking HCL...important is to see whether your kid can handle the subject.... no point opt for it and he/she has to struggle

Same like Funx3 dd, my dd doesn't read Chinese books too....but she has other exposures to the language as well as tuition.....

Let me know if you have other queries...

Good morning, PHP, thank you for your answer to my question. Even students in HCL C1 class failed HCL? I heard that in each of the 9 form classes, English is taught in each form class while other 3 subjects are taught in other banding classes. Is it true? Not sure whether the English teachers also teach other subjects. Currently this year, my daughter's form teacher teaches 3 subjects. thank you in advance.

I don't think there are some failures from C1. Could be someone from C6 or C7, but also a very rare case.
During my ds's batch, only Math and Chinese are banded. English and Science were taught in their form classes.
It is common that one teacher teaches 3 subjects, especially in lower primary in singapore not just Pei Hwa.
Thanks a lot for your reply and information!

May be a good news for PH. Recent years, the results of the NMOS, SMOPS and the ACS Mathlympics are not that good.

For NMOS, only four made it to the special round.
For ACS Maths Olympiad, Only 4 P5 and 4 P4 made it to the final round.
My son, together with one of his classmate got a silver for NMOS and ACS. :congrats: to them.

Very strange as I expected this year's P5 to be the strongest.
After all, they have more than 50 pupils who went past the GEP 1st round who are still in PH.

I met my dd ex-classmate ..... apparently .. one of the class has a lot of changes to the teachers. Having the same teacher in a subject is important.

So you believe that giftedness and the ability to get into GEP is due to the effort by the school?

                    看了一题南洋小一Term1的数学题, 小一第一学期就考这样的题, 看来各校要求确实不一样, 邻里小学在GEP考试中吃亏是肯定了。

As we are new (dd will be transferred to PHP next yr), may I check what time does the class usually start and end for P3? Does P3 have any extra classes to attend after school lesson? I am a full time working mum without any helper, therefore need to look for student care service but PHP inhouse student care is full! Still looking out for one. I also need to work out on the school bus services. When will they start their CCA? DD did not study HCL during her P1-2. May I check what are the extra things that need to take note for taking up HCL besides their textbook? Really appreciate to get some info from anyone of you! :please:
