NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (Diploma)
-
Thanks Ray142 and Artume for your input.
There is no doubt that NUS high is the best school for high ability students in Science and Math. It is also a very specialised school. I will discuss with my son about his options. -
Boys2Men:
Last year we underwent theMy son scored 257 with A* in both Math and Science. He has been consistently scoring A* in these 2 subjects with both his languages at an average mark of 85 in school. However, we did not attempt to DSA him to any schools earlier.
Would like to know his chance of getting of getting into NUS via DSA phase 2.
Will he need to go for interviews and assessments?
At the same time, I suppose we will also need to submit his SI option under the normal posting procedures.
How will these 2 processes work together?
same situation. We didn't go for any dsa. We applied for nush and filled up the s1 option form also. We got our place in rgs (our choice in s1 option form) At the same time we were called for an interview by nush. My dd attended the interview got the confirmation order from nush. After thinking very hard, we got transfer from rgs and joined nush. Your ds has a good chance in phase 2 with a* in maths and science. If not you still have your place in the school you have selected in s1 option form. -

Nus is a high abilities school. They guage students 9 months earlier dsa intake for high abilities (test n interviews) my ds went for interview n lessons even earlier before the dsa intake. Now atm there r limited place ,so they r selecting the best t score. One time last year when i was in nus, one of a year5 student commented even if u get a score of 270 there is no guaranteed u get a place in nus. He commented nus is the best sec. School in sg( the average cop intake is for students with high abilities. Thats is the reason it varies year to year)
I agree with you. There is no guarantee that students with high t score will get their place here. They first make sure that the pupil is independent, consistent and is really interested in maths and science, thro test/ interview as these qualities are necessary to survive in this school. -
Hi wonder mum
My ds will be be in nush next year. What r the things i should be concern abt -
RAY142:
Actually your ds is in this school means no need to worry about anything. The school will take care of the subjects and the teachers are very helpful. They are ready to teach the chapters which your ds feels difficult to cope with. I just help my dd by not putting her in extra classes and making sure that she doesn't over do her work(studying).Hi wonder mum

Artume:
yes. I think some may and some may not have tests/ interviews. Hopefully the students who have a consistent record with a*s in maths and science (from p3/p4) may directly get CO. Mine had some ups and downs, so could have been called for interview. For DSA Phase 2, I think it is an additional offer on top of the normal S1 options and either can be taken, which is why there is still a waiting list for this phase. I am not entirely certain though, so please correct me if there is any mistake.
I don't think that there will be additional tests and interviews (edit: there may be interviews as provided by wonder mom below), there are too many applicants. The school will mainly use PSLE, but also prior achievements (as well as DSA Phase 1 results, if any) to determine admission. -

Other than studies, what worried me at first was the distance to school and the time they spend at school but now we got used to that. Do you have any specific concerns? will try to clarify.Hi wonder mum
