Hi hi,
I’m Kelly, mommy of 2 girls, 1 in primary 2 and 1 in N2.
Was Yahoo-ing "singapore primary schools" when I found this place and had registered immediately.
Primary 1 was tough. The form teacher kept having feebacks about my girl not paying attention in class, not listening, not concentrating on her work, having untidy handwritings, etc and even recommended that we should go for medical advise for AHDH.
She even ranked the last in her class with an average score of 90.
Well, Daddy and I had tried our best to communicate to her during the December holidays and do see some improvements in her. We’ve not gone for medical advise, but, she certainly is not an AHDH child.
Hope I’m not too late to start being Kiasu now~ -

daily communication is pretty important too....the 15min my husband spent everynight chatting with my son, my son reveals more to him than the whole day i spent with him.

I can understand how you feel.
No parent will like it, when their child is told to seek
medical advise. Especially when you are with your
child on a daily basis and find she’s just like any other
kid…
However, from a teacher’s point of view, she may have
her reasons for recommending such medical advise.
Firstly, she does not label your child to be ADHD as yet.
Hence, she recommends a proper clinical assessment for
your child. Early intervention reali helps if the case is
confirmed. On the other hand it is not a confirmed case,
then parents can heave a sigh of relief…
When the teacher feedbacks that your child is inattentive,
there are many levels to that… Some children who are
inattentive can go under tables and chairs, go round disturbing
their friends, walk around the class, etc Some others are just
not very interested with a "look-at-the-board" approach of
learning. If the feedbacks are very general, you should have
a good talk with the teacher to find out the extent of all her
feedbacks. If the issues she has mentioned has caused a
disruption to the class, it may also pose a problem for her
to conduct her lesson effectively.
Untidy handwritings… To what extent?
Is it still legible for the teacher to read or just not
very neat by the teacher’s standards? Details to
these petty-seem issues can help parents to review
developments of the child.
Prior to attending P1, has there been similar feedbacks
from kindergarten, playschool, childcare? If there were
no similar occurences previously, can share that with
the teacher. That child has no such mentioned problems
like what she has encountered… If you have samples of
your child’s work from previous centres attended, bring
them out and share with the teacher.
It is never too late to be kiasu.
All parents want the best for their children.
That’s understandable…
The thing now is to resolve the mentioned feedbacks,
seek the best solution to ensure your child improves
in all the areas concerned. As parents are not in class
to know what is going on, the teachers’ feedbacks and
observations should be taken into consideration. Parents
then observe child and assess child’s development/progress.
Then, report back to the teacher on the assistance given
to the child at home to improve the situation.
If the teacher can provide pointers on how parents can help
the child at home, even better… More constructive.

Buds' advice is excellent. I would just like to add that we can never give up trying to communicate our children even if it seem not to be working.
I'm surprised that she ranks last in class with an average score of 90. Is that for all or just some of her subjects? Her classmates must be very good then.
