      Hi Mummies

      Need your advices.

My girl (3.5yrs old) is in I Can Read and going to be promoted to Thinking & Creative Skills in 2 weeks. I enrolled her in ICL cos of good feedbacks but wondering should she stay put in I Can Read since she is doing fine?

      Thanks
      Hi chrismei

I am in the same situation. My ds (5.5yo) in ICR Stage 1 now. I recently enrolled him in ICL K2 crash, but wondering should i switch to ICL from ICR?

Did you eventually switch to ICL? thanks.

            Hi Mommies,

I’m new here and this is my first post. I’ve enrolled my 4yo son to ICL (Clementi Branch) and will be attending their orientation for parents this weekend.

I’m lucky to be able to have got a placing for him as the administor mentioned that this is a new class…

            Wonder how’s the teacher there?

I found this set of phonics book from Popular Bookstore called Fun with Phonics (book 1 is Consonants, book 2 is Vowels). It says for Ages 5 and up but I used them with my 4 year old daughter. It really works!

I started her with 1-2 sections a day (one section is one sound) with book 1, and within 2 weeks, she can start blending simple 3-letter words. Before no matter how hard I tried to teach her blending (she knew most letter sounds then), she just could not blend, even simple ones like a-t. Yes, she can remember simple 2-letter words like at, is, by sight but not by sounding out. And I feel that blending is a great step towards phonics and reading. I was so pleased with book 1 that I bought book 2. After 1 month, she actually can read some very simple books with a combination of sight words (e.g. the), and sounds. 😄

The books are not very expensive. It is about S$14.90 per book, and each book consists of a CD too. I didn't play the CD often but I think if you play it occasionally, it would definitely help with her pronunciation. I quite like the activities in each section because it heightens her phonic awareness and strengthen her skills. Of course, the \"catch\" is you have to work with her, she can't really do it on her own (well, maybe with the CD). You don't have to spend a lot of time, maybe 10-15 minutes for 1-2 sections, or maybe 3 depending on her attention and interest level.

You can just buy Book 1 to try it and see if it works for you and your child. Hope it helps!

                    Dear MommyNg,

                    Thank you for sharing.

I got the whole set too. I thought short vowel should be the first book?

May i know how do you teach? You focus on the 'b' sound when you taught consonant b?

                    Dear Parents,
My 4yo was attended MMI one to one weekly lesson since Jan 2010 and had stopped after a term. The lesson was taught in very fast speed using worksheets and large arcylic movable alphabet . No explanation or pictures were being showed. He needs to pick the correct alphabet when teacher says the words. Sometimes, my child need to learn short vowel o in a lesson. He didn't like it and always cried out.

In the past i found it very hard to teach at home as i didn't know phonics at all and also not aware what book is good. I knew the existence of Leapfrog dvd and starfall, very popular in many forums. However, not much help to me, just a brief introduction. I was stucked and didn't know where to start till BUDS recommended My Preschooler World Series that comes with VCD. The sounds is very clear and the books are simple and good.

The FUN with Phonics is equally good that comes with CD too. More wordy.

Should you need more free readers or idea for activites to work with your child, you may find the sites in this thread.

                      Hi Chrismei,

Will be signing up for the weekend (sat) class as we could not suit the weekday schedule.

Have you collected any materials during the orientation?

So I presume teacher Soo Chin will be coaching our children eh?

                      Regards.

When did you register for the sat's class? just curious ...We did not collect any materials during our orientation. I am not sure who will be teaching on sat's class...

                        regards
