      Hi Snow24,

The suspected ASD label can only get you into the queue of the govt eipic of your choice. Within six months after your son commence class, you have to submit a formal psychologist report (you can choose to do it in the govt CDU or a private psychologist of your own choice) in order to stay on in the program.

For most privately-run eipic, the suspected ASD label is enough.

              Double E:
              tyeogh:

By \"very reluctantly\", I mean kicking and screaming. I even wrote to their principal to complain how narrow minded they are when they insisted on parental involvement and zero transport assistance. I guess we parents of sped kids have thick hides.....

Yeah, I think is unreasonable to insist parental involvement during lessons. Parents have to work to pay for the therapies! They could have been more hardworking eg. take videos during lesson and send to parents or write notes in communication book to update parents what was done in the class and what should be reinforced at home.

I do understand why the school insist on parental involvement. Equipping parents and care giver with the skills to handle the child and in a inconsistent way as that of the school is important. So getting parental involvement during lesson act as a training ground to allow parents to see how teaching is done, behaviors are managed, obsession being dealt with and so on.

However i do understand where parents are coming from as therapy are not cheap and it is usually for a prolong period of time. It is always easy for the schools and professionals to say that you need to engage your child but is certainly not easy in Singapore.

I do agree that that there are other ways to do it to equip parents with the necessary skills. One of the things i like to do is to have a team meeting where parents and all the therapists come together and we will discuss on which is the one thing that is of the most concern. We then will brainstorm on a behavioral management strategy for all situations (eg. outdoor, classroom, home etc). We will then all agree on it and manage this one behavior consistently for a start. When parents see that it does make a big difference and improvement, they too will be empowered and will want to handle other behaviors as well. Then we will move on to the next behavior. This help to expose the different behavioral management strategies to parents and through time, they will be able to apply them on other situation as well. This is a suggestion that you can put up for the schools. Though it is not as intense as going to observe the school sessions everyday, it will ultimately reach the same goal of equipping the parents and care giver with the necessary skills and knowledge.

              Hope it helps 😃

                Hi Appleworm

                Thank you for sharing.
My son is 5 years old next year.checked that Pat schoolhouse ratio is 1:9 and Brighton is ratio is 1:14 for kindergarten level.

Ideally ratio of 1:5-6 would be better.

His current childcare is 1:16 his teacher already have difficulties coping with him he tend to leave his classroom and not focusing. This whole year she just leave him wandering around doing what he likes and isolate him so that she can take care of the rest of his whole class.I think in the long run it does not help my son to remain in his current childcare as he did not learn anything there given that his teacher just left him alone. My son is independent and he can learn at his own pace but this is not in line with his current childcare which promote whole class progression as a group.

I actually don't think think there is any kindergarten or childcare that has such a low ratio of 1:5/6 especially in K1 or K2 level. If there is, is either the fees are very expensive or there is something abt the centre that is not right and no parents want to send their kids there. I think Pat's School house is your best bet at 1:9.

Either that, you may want to try other type of learning centre that is not Kindergarten or Childcare. Have u heard of Cognitive Learning at Fusionopolis? My son is there now taking Eng tuition, the student ration is very low and they follow MOE syllabus. My son is K1 this year and will be K2 next year. But I am suspending his cognitive learning lesson for first half of next year as I want to let him try Brainy Moves, a centre that focus on movement and exercising to train focus and concentration. I will put my son back to Cognitive in the 2nd half of next year to prepare him for P1.

Also to share more on cognitive. Their lesson is once a week for 2 hours and is $500 a mth. But of course you can have more lessons a week if you want, just have to pay more. What I like is apart from academic, they also teach the kids behaviour, how they should behave in class and give them verbal cues to help them along. They also provide transition assistance like providing a report for you to give to your kid's mainstream teacher and share tips with them on how to manage your kid in the mainstream environment. And I just learned that if your kid is due for IQ test soon, the teacher in Cognitive can do a IQ trial for your kid to prepare him for the real test, at no additional charge.

                      Hi Double E

Can you share more on brainy moves? What’s the fee like? My son has issue with focusing and tend to lose interest quickly.

Cognitive learning offered what subject for academics ?

I tried to find kindergarten and childcare with low teacher to student ratio mostly are 1:10-15.

I hv not been to Brainy moves yet so can’t share much. But u can read from its website. Just google brainy moves. Dr Jia Jia, if u know who is also attending lesson there, he has dyslexia.

As for Cognitive, they teach Eng, maths and science. Each subject is charged separately.
