      Happy Mama:
Can I ask if most of you are getting the Mac book Air or Pro?

I was earlier very confirmed that I'm getting the 256GB Air cos of the design and lightweight. However, this morning DD's Pri school classmates who are also joining RGS (close to 10 of them) told her they are all taking Pro.

Now I'm so confused. Is Pro really so much better than Air?

      Thanks.
Hi HAppy Mama, Great to have your Gal joining the RGS Family! :rahrah: :rahrah:

Just happen to read thru the thread, with some rgs parents having similar query on MacBook Pro & MacBook Air. So sharing with other Year 1 parents.

My Gal started with a MacBook Pro, coz wanna have bigger screen, and all the added stuff. But after her bag was stolen (she kept her macbook in the sch bag ๐Ÿ˜ž in early year 2, while we were in JB for a day trip, after sch) she opted for a MacBook Air.

      Reason? Much Lighter!
Coz she's the one who has to lug it around to sch and back home everyday, as she started taking public transport to sch in year 2.

It serves her well thus far, so a MacBook Air is sufficient for their sch work use. Unless your gal wanted to do a lot of Animated or 3d rendering related stuffs, not really necessary to get a Macbook Pro.
That few hundred grammes in wt does count when one has to lug the sch bag ard, Unless ....

U wanna train up your gal's Muscles! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I got Air 13inch 128GB for my girl. Air is much lighter and If she needs more memory space, she can use an external hard disk. The external disk can be a backup too.

Btw, do we need to install Mac Office 2011?

We went for Air 128GB. Bought additional MS office as well.

Funny part is their classmates are in โ€˜synchโ€™ to buy the same.
Still thinking if we should get insurance coverage.

Is this insurance coverage same as 4 years of onsite support? The onsite support is quite good. My girl has utilised the onsite support a few times in the last 2 years and one time was to repair the keyboard. Very convenient since the support is onsite in school.

As for insurance, it really depends. I realise that the girls just anyhow leave their laptops around in school (even when no one is around) but so far so good. :xedfingers: Have read of emails from girls asking if anyone has seen their laptops but I think they have found their laptops. Not sure if anyone has really lost their laptops before in school. What I worry most is the girls also anyhow leave their laptops around when they are out of the school compound since this is a habit.

I believe that the insurance does not cover theft? I can't remember clearly now, but I know we didn't get the insurance as the main thing we would have liked was protection in case of theft. I also don't like the way the girls all leave their Macs lying around, but since everyone has one, I guess the risk of loss is less. However, my daughter always keeps hers in her bag out of sight when she has to leave it behind somewhere - she feels it's less at risk from theft/pranks/itchy fingers if it's out of sight. And she uses a password as well.

My daughter has the Pro, and yes, the few hundred grammes do make a difference, but only a little. Other than that, my daughter is happy with the Pro as it allows her ample memory space and is quite robust. She likes the bigger screen too as it just makes working easier. She's the kind who has multiple stuff open a lot especially when she's putting a vodcast or video or what-have-you together. I think it also has a faster processor? Not sure about that. She takes MRT/bus to and from school, and she's got used to it. Her previous computer was even heavier, and she also had to lug it around quite a bit as she used to walk to school and had to bring it to school daily when we were overseas.

Do the girls carry two bags? One for Mac and other for books ?.

Mac Pro 128 price is about the same as 256 air. But wit a faster processor. It seems sturdier than air as air has got thin edges. Dropping the laptop may break or dent the edges. My reasons for choosing pro. if more storage needed compatible usb drive can be used.

Not sure what other girls have, but my daughter carries a backpack with a padded computer compartment. I think a lot of 'schoolbag' backpacks come with that now. They don't carry many books, so it's not that heavy to have Mac and other things all in 1 bag. We prefer her not to carry her Mac separately (I see quite a lot of girls do that, and I think it's quite risky!) since she takes public transport and needs at least 1 hand free.

Usually most of girls brought the pro instead of air. Proโ€™s CPU is much fast than air. They can do a lot of things. I told my girl that she needs to use for 6 years until uni as I am not rich. The weight is ok for them as they donโ€™t bring a lot of books, only notes. My girl carries the pro every day. Donโ€™t buy the pro or air from outside. If u purchase at school, they will repair or change if u need some maintenance.
