My son is in P2 this year. He was told to go to another class for his Chinese lesson. May i know why is this so?

The children are grouped according to their Chinese results in end P1 to facilitate teaching based on Chinese ability of the kids.
From what I learnt from other parents, those who are good in Chinese from last year's class 1B and 1C goes to CL3 class and those who are good from 1F goes to CL6. If I am not wrong, for past 2 years, there was also this banding for Chinese class.

Thought of sharing on CCA. While cca is not compulsory in primary school, after what we’ve experienced (2 kids in sec school this year and 1 in MBS), I personally think it’s important to expose and develop the child in this area. It’s good that MBS has quite a good cca selection and quite a couple are their niche area.

While the key objective would be to build an interest area for the child, it would be good if the child can excel in their cca. CCA helps build discipline and interest. Personally, I don’t let my kids cca hop and they started their cca at P1/P2 and up to P6. I feel this teaches about persistence as well.

Having gone through 2 rounds of PSLE, we see how cca becomes "handy" when it comes to direct school admission (DSA) or even for appeal cases during PSLE. You can read about it in DSA or PSLE appeal thread. Based on our observation, MBS probably has 20-30 students who gain places via DSA annually. This can be in the area of academic, sports or performing arts.

So yes, do seriously consider engaging your dc in a cca and keep to it. Also, it’s good to start early and not leave it to P4/P5 (probably too late). You never know if this will come in handy one day.

But it's kinda hard to pinpoint skills and abilities (matched by interest!) at such a young age as P1! That's my struggle.

My son has been exposed to arts, music and dance having been from Nafa Arts Kindergarten but he doesn't strike me as particularly \"artistic\". He does TKD on weekends but doesn't seem to display any giftedness in that practice either. He swims well but unsure if he would be keen to invest so much time and energy in that.

So how does one decide and stick with just one thing?

My personal opinion so don't me

For sports, it's rather demanding and competitive for dsa/ appeal unless one is good at national level or is able to represent schools and win those awards. But I suppose this is an area of talent which is discovered early. Eg. while one can swim well, is he an exceptional talent and does he want to be groom in this area ? Just an example.

For performing arts, I feel this is an area that can be developed. Eg. my kids didn't proclaim they have passion for music when they are young even though they learnt the piano since young, etc... but I decided to put them through band. Subequently, through years of exposure and influence, they start to develop passion for their instrument. When my kids are P4, it was clear that they enjoy their cca, yearn to be selected to perform for SYF, to be leaders and excel in their area. So this become an opportunity area for them.

In P1/P2, MBS historically exposed the students to cornet and guzheng so this will give them a flavor of it.

I know this is overwhelming for P1 parents but wanted to share this for perspective. In secondary school, it is compulsory to have a cca for bonus points etc... (well things might change in few years time????) but at this point, secondary cca needs to go through trials/ auditions. It's no longer about what you want to join. While we are unsure how the \"new\" tscore will look, I personally believe with MOE vision to expose children to be all rounders iso good in academic only, cca is an area that will not be de-priortise.

But key thing is as parents, we must be supportive in whatever they want to engage in. I have seen some parents asking their child to give up cca as their academic result didn't reach the level their parents expected. Thought it's quite a waste.
