IMHO, To have supplementary class is fine but to start them any earlier than p4/5 is a bit ridiculous.

      :goodpost: i certainly agree.
there is no reason to start supplementary classes before p5. syllabus can be completed for p1-4...unless the supplementary lessons are having external vendors brought in to supplement...that is what I term 'supplement'...supplement what is taught in school during curriculum hours.

Well, it depends on the community that school is serving. In some areas, it would be good to keep the vulnerable kids in school so that they won’t loiter around the neighbourhood, especially those with no adults at home.

Perhaps supplementary class is another term for remedial class? In which case, it's kinda like tuition except it's conducted by the school teacher. Nothing wrong with that. I was more than happy when DS had to attend English remedial class and was asking if he could ask to attend Math remedial class.

I hardly hear remedial nowadays. Always \"supplementary\"...and yes...seems to have started this year already. So early!

to attend ‘remedial’ lessons indicates the child is weak…so the word supplementary is used instead.

If it is remedial class to help the weaker kids, yes, it is necessary to start ASAP. But if it is supplementary class to prepare for psle, then it should be for upper primary.

                that’s my thoughts.

                  Yup...that should be the way.
Remedial is for weaker students...anytime from p1, especially those who have no tuition. I requested for daughter to continue with science remedial lessons as well as small group lessons as she can grasp concepts under less pressure.

There is no supplementary lessons for dd’s class but still need to stay back in school 2 to 3 days for other stuff. no time to spare for CCA. Opt out!

True, this is what I understand fr some educator frens.
So prob, there are more supp classes or remedial classes
Conducted in mass community sch compared to other \" branded\" sch.

I do heard fr a fren , fr branded girl sch, teachers not able to complete syllabus, and here comes exam! The sch assume all kids have their own private and outsourced tuition classes to teach.

Thus, it depends on sch students profile, only the sch leaders know n decide. If there is choice, teachers will also want to go home early to their own kids n personal life than to hold long lessons .Or earn extra money by giving pte tuition 😛

Usually schools will use the word 'supplementary' when classes are conducted for a significant majority/whole of the class and 'remedial' when it is a small select group.

In the end though, I guess the lessons are there to help students fare better and cope with the curriculum. I agree that these lessons should not be necessary for most students from P1 to P3, but it really depends on how much support the student needs.

I however disagree that supplementary lessons should be conducted simply to keep students 'busy' and away from home. That's akin to suggesting that if parents are not able to parent the child, the state should be responsible to adopt them. Don't think that is the right approach...
