      Cool Cool:
      Hi all mummies and daddies,

I am very happy to find this thread. This is my first time in this forum. Let me introduce about my son.

He is 27 month old and has high risk of ASD according to his doctor at CDU. So he was referred to hearing test, ST, OT and dietitian. He has seen all the therapists and done the hearing test as well. Since he is not a PR (even though we both are PRs), he can't get any subsidy. So Dr suggested to go for a private special school. Private schools are very very expensive!! and most of them are not in the west area.

Currently he is attending a 2 hr play group near our house. He is ok at school not crying nor clingy. But doesn't follow teacher's instruction and most of the time walking around or looking at posters or lie down on floor. So the teacher was telling me to look for a special school for him. 😞

Do you have any recommendation for private school which is good and not so expensive in west area?

      Thanks in advance. 🙂
      Hi,
Welcome. Its a tough question. Hope someone has an answer. Good luck!

Got a question. Parents of ASD children should be more stressed than normal parents. Do you take time outs to go on a date with your spouse? How often and for how long? Can share?

So only 2.5 parents here date? DoubleE, me and cheater slmkhoo? Come share share. Don't shy.

The longest we were away from our kids when they were young was 3 days! And we've only done it twice. I couldn't bring myself to leave them longer with grandparents - partly because the grandparents would spoil them dreadfully, and also because they don't have a maid either and it would be too much for them to handle. But when my kids got older (teens), they started to go away without us! They have stayed with friends for up to a week.

Time to go for a break!

Actually, we timed that visit to friends for them during a week we were very busy, and also hosting some out-of-town visitors (and needed the girls' bedroom!). So, no time to go away ourselves. We have now got to the stage where we know our times to travel with them are numbered, so we want to bring them along!

The one with stephen hawkings is called \"The Theory of Everything\". I thot I will doze off but no! It is good. But it is more of a love story between him and his wife though, not much of maths for your hubby 😄

He doesn't expect the film to have Maths (if so, he certainly wouldn't expect me to watch!). Which wife? He had 2, as far as I know. It's amazing how he's managed to continue his work for so long.

            Slmkhoo
is abt him and his first wife, Jane Hawkings, very moving. The second wife was mentioned briefly.

                  Hi Cool Cool,

Welcome to the thread and a bear hug to you! Hmm… You are right. Private special needs schools are usually very expensive. There are 3 of which I know of which are considered west or central.

                  1. Genesis School for Special Education at west coast road

                  2. Ichiban Nurtureland (not Montessori!) at choa chu kang

                  3. Weecare branch at Everton road (outram)

In my opinion, as your son is still very young, there is really no need to attend pre-school (I believed he will be in N1 class this year?) but we need to focus more on intervention such as ABA or sped class, OT and ST to help your son gain enough joint attention to be able to focus in class.

Ya, agree. Don't need to attend pre-school yet. Can delay until 4 yrs old. Both my kids (NT and Aspie) only attend pre-school at 4 yrs old. In the meantime, if you want to introduce concept of attending classes. can do those 1 hr kind during weekends. You are better off focusing on intervention.
Btw, weecare is v v expensive, though their teacher-student ratio is good and their teachers are v kind.

This is a bad week for me.

School started to introduce composition writing and my aspie DS had to write compos every day as homework. He came home every night and looked at me to help him do his compo homework cos he had practically no idea what to write for the given topic. Coupled with his unwillingness to write and his inclination for perfection, he had meltdowns every night.

Anyone knows how I can help him write on his own, rather than I write for him? How can I teach him how to come up with ideas and creative phrases for his compo? How can I make him more willing to write his own compos and not fearful that his writing is not good enough? Anyone has walked this path? Can give me some pointers?
                      :imdrowning:

                      TIA

While helping him with the skills, have you asked the teacher to reduce the workload? Tell the teacher what issues he has, and ask for the homework and standards to be adjusted for him. It's not the standard of English that is at issue here, but the social understanding that it takes to create and tell a story, and our kids are limited in this skill. Based on my Aspie daughter's experience, compo writing is tough as these kids can't see things from another's perspective. It does get better with age and experience, but it takes time.

Initially, maybe forget the creative phrases and \"interesting\" content, and just work on getting a basic storyline. Talk the compo over with him, and help him work on an outline. Then get him to write out the story. It will be very bare bones and rather disjointed at first, but something is better than nothing. This is why you need to get the teacher's cooperation so she will not be as critical about his efforts as for other kids. And you have to convince him also that it's the effort that counts, not the product. Once he is more comfortable with the whole process of getting a story on paper, you can try to work on the cosmetics. Hope this helps.
