A Letter from ST Forum

I think the author's issue is more on the fact that her son no longer is the top in the class, rather than whether her son enjoys Chinese lessons or not.
Look at the way she put it. She sounded so proud that her son was top in English and Maths, and Top 3 for Chinese.
More of a pride issue for her than anything else, in my opinion.

I feel there are some contradiction in this report. First it say the child was among the best third in Chinese in a mother tongue class of 36 in P1 but then in P2 he will not understand 90 per cent of what his teacher is saying.
Can the change be so drastic from P1 to P2? -

True lah, ks2me. As much as I hate to admit it, dissent and discussion is good - it's a real eye opener, we get to hear completely different viewpoints, and we can decide if its reasonable so that next time, we ourselves won't be so inward-looking.It take sorts to make the world and it is good to know dhere they exists.

I read a report on Japanese parents demands getting very unreasonable too......expects cc to provide the parents with breakfast when they drop off their kids...
:celebrate: Here's to keeping an open mind!! -

the change the parent claimed is that in P2, the chinese teacher refused to use English to teach Chinese. -

Siao liao....since it's SAP school, what if they use Chinese to teach English....then the kid lagi catch no ball. Hello, chinese class....not translating class. Somebody should wake up the parent.

I believe, in SAP school, Chinese is also used to teach some non-core subjects, like Arts, Music, etc ā¦

Agreed. I had attended some SAP school events and the teachers used Chinese to convey instructions. Point of SAP schools is to enhance the chinese language and culture, no?
Also, I understand that P3/4 will be a fairly great jump in standards; P5/6 another big jump. I'm also amazed that his standard can slide so much (from 3rd to lost) within the span of a year. I would be very very worried when come to future years.
I just hope that SG parents are not going down the paths of becoming monster parents. Still want to keep good teachers in the teaching line for our future generations. -

It's like parents who send their children to mission schools and then complain about their kids being indocrinated with Christian teachings, having to pray, sing hymns and listen to devotion. What do they expect?
Yeah! I remember that complaint several yrs ago in the ST. -
