      Hi all,

Care to share what you guys think about the series "Diary of a whimpy kid"? Saw the trailer in the cinemas recently and have many colleague’s children reading it and buying up all the books in the series. It didn’t really appeal to me though…

What are some of the other books that will interest kids around the age of 9 to 10? Am trying to kick start some good reading habits in my nieces and nephews. How do you encourage them to speak proper English too?
They seem to automatically lapse into Singlish wherever they are yet find such difficulty speaking in proper English.

Am getting a bit worried as they don’t do very well in their oral scores.

      TIA!

Actually my kids love it. The only book that "inspire" them to finish in a day. However, they only have 5 titles?

They found it amusing and with the pictures, etc… it probably appeals to them. In fact, the diary of the wimpy kids is also part of British Council library selection.

Mine have read all the books. Yeap, it’s something that they can read within a day. They like the cartoon drawn too. Took some of the drawing technic to try on.

Hmm, actually I did not like it a lot as i felt that the writing did not help much for the children to pick up good vocab and it is quite boring but I think it appeals to many kids and it is a good start for reluctant readers- my own opinion…I know tt many pple do like it though.

Another good book I like is The Percy Jackson series. For upper pri kids but very interesting and I got the whole series from my fav supplier tt I talked about in some other threads so got good deal…esp now that I know tt many bookstores are out of stock for their whole series. It is now a movie as well.

Talking about movies based on books, anyone know of any other good ones that can encourage kids to read?

Coraline is good. I've read the book though it's meant for upper pri kids. Haven't seen the movie yet though.

My kids also like the adventurebox series that we get via school subscription. He found it so interesting that he will be able to finish it fast.
