Similar to eesis given to top 3% of each p6 cohort, the scholarship given to gep students ( who don’t qualify for eesis such as my son )is for 6 years. There is no differentiation between gep and non gep students from year 3.

          From MOE website:
          3. Tenure

3.1 The tenure of the scholarship is 4 years for students who are not in the IP, and 6 years for students in the IP. The scholar must make good progress each year in order to continue receiving the scholarship.

Anyway in order not to confuse the issue, EESIS is the one same scholarship for both mainstream and GEP kids.

Hi experienced parents with sec 2 kids n above or senior boys ,

My son is in Sec 1 and he is still quite lost in what can he read up or work on to revise for tests and exams other than his notes from school. He is not having any tuition since we also have no idea what help he needs yet n so many subjects. Any advises on what can he work on for each subject?

Chinese and eng- assessment books necessary? Don't seems to see any ard in popular
Math - IP math by Shinglee is the only one we can find so far.
History - RI history is like a mystery to me.. v different from mainstream for sure and even other IP schs it seems.. πŸ˜“
Geography and science - any good guides or assessments books (not really to do but get a good feel of how qns in test are like) to read up on ....

            Thanks and appreciate your help!

Just follow what's given by the school will be fine. Too free ? Go have some fun. Don't need those assessment books to numb the boy. Yes the history of RI is more than history of singapore. That's enuf.

How has he been faring so far in his assignments and tests? And how are those compared to his class? If it is ok, don't even need to do other assessments.

so far? no much test leh.. only a couple came back with ard 60-70 plus percent maybe..the rest are projects which still dunno results yet. But projects hard to gauge mah..

Compare?? I don't know the other parents well and even if i do, i don't ask their kids' results. πŸ˜“ Cos i don't feel comfy doing that and also not nice to compare right for my child? unless if they happened to check with each other then my child might tell me but he is like me most of the time, wont bother to find out the results of the rest of his classmates..so there is no way I will know the class avg results except the usual answers by kids...oh, teacher say my results is ok..class highest of only blah blah blah :skeptical:

I m looking for any materials recommendation for even just reading up as well.. if got assessment qns which he can look up on that will be even better lor.. not necessary to do but at least for him to gauge the format a little.. which i think shd be v different fr what they used to do in primary ...

                    Hi Love4learning,

My son is in Sec 2 this year. Here's what I remember from his Year 1.

English: There is a grammar editing for MYCT. His previous English teacher asked us to buy any upper secondary grammar editing book. She recommended the following book:
Upper Secondary English Editing by Alexa Estelle D
                    Publisher: Fairfield book publishers
I am kiasu so I bought 2 other books. It is quite fast to finish a book. I think about 2 days for a book? I couldn't remember what other topics were tested but we didn't buy any other books for English.

We didn't buy books for other subjects. School notes are enough.

Chinese: Sorry I don't know how DS studied.

Maths: The teacher will give supplementary worksheets. Please make sure your son does those. No other books is necessary. That Shinglee book is also not necessary.

History: Your son needs to study the techniques. If have time, read the handouts for background knowledge. I think it is still possible to get good grades even if don't read History handouts in Year 1 πŸ˜‰ But make sure your son knows the techniques to do source-based questions and essay (sorry I can't remember essay is semester 1 or 2).

                    Geog and Science: Read handouts.

For all subjects, your son can do the RI past year papers and give it to the teachers to mark. However, some teachers may not mark if too near to MYCT because they are overwhelmed with so many past year papers the boys submit.

Teachers will also have consultation time. Look out for it and make use of it.

                    All the best!

                      @ ngl2010..

Students can join Debate is a Core or Merit CCA, in RI..
                      iFF,

According to 2015 students' handbook (see image) Debate is Core CCA. However, last night I asked DS and he said he ever heard that Debate can be a Merit CCA. Is Debate as Merit CCA an exception on case by case basis? DS also told me he heard somebody is taking Waterpolo as Merit CCA instead of Core CCA. Another exception case?

Thans for the advice, ngl2010. Can you elaborate a little bit more on the \"history answering technique\", is this give during the lecture to the boys?

Also for the past year papers, so far, I've only seen Chinese past year papers

                        :thankyou:
