Are there any easy to use books or diy programmes to teach kids social language?
Besides Jed Baker, Carol Gray is another author who wrote The New Social Story Book. The book coaches readers on how to write social stories to illustrate various social scenarios and norms. But I find that her book is meant more for the older children with a certain command of the language. You can get her books from the library too. I recall some mummy recommended it here at this forum. -

Except the social story, social group is another choice. My son attending now, they learn through playing games. Not bad. -

Is the social group that your son is attending conducted by a ST or Sped teacher? Is the focus of the social class more on preparing them for Pri sch environment?
My son is currently attending a social class conducted by a ST. He is in N2, and his classmates are a k1 girl and K2 boy and they seem to be doing ST work in a group setting rather than really social-social stuff (if you know what I mean). I am abit puzzled so perhaps u can share with me? -

My son’s one is a group about 10 kids with one ST and one OT. They play games, show and tell and sharing their own experience. Theose games help them to pick up the skills needed in a group. Is there the same as yours? -

I brought my ASD daughter to her therapy session. On the way I asked if she wanted to use the toilet and she said no. Its a routine that we have set up, where she is still on a prompt system in using the toilet. Since we started this I have stopped packing an extra set of clothes because she had largely stopped having accidents.
But alas, she couldnt hold herself in the car and wet the car seat. I didnt realize until I have parked the car and brought her to the toilet - that’s when I realized that her clothes were all wet. She had kept totally silent about it during the whole of our car journey. We were very near our therapy appointment, so we rushed to the clothing shop to pick up some fresh clothes for her. It didnt help that the shop was understaffed and the shop assistant was totally clueless on what to do. Then we rushed to pick up some bread for a quick bite cos she had just finished school. I thought to myself - what a bad day.
Throughout the whole episode I did not scold her, nor raise my voice. But I told her in a firm voice that I was upset, because she was supposed to go to the toilet when it was time to do so, especially since I asked her earlier.
Towards the end, my ASD daughter said to me,"Mummy, I apologize to you for shee-sheeing in my pants, until you are upset."
In that instant moment, my anger disappeared. Totally. Here I was, reprimanding a special needs child for an accident, and there she was, graciously apologizing for her mistake, and trying to appease me. And what more with such a beautifully crafted sentence. A child who could not say a word when she was 3 years old.
They say as parents, we learn from our children. But it makes an even more precious lesson when we learn from our special needs children. I will never forget this day for the shamefulness that I felt for myself when I compare myself to my special needs child - about how big her heart was and how small my heart had been.
Was it a bad day? It was. Was it a good day? It was, too. -

Anyone can share how do you help your ASD preschooler to transit to primary school. After going to primary school , what types of support do your child has ? Any allied educator support from the primary school and what the school did for your child? Does your child continue to go occupation therapy, speech therapy (if applicable)? -

Before entering school, my son attended several weeks of p1 preparatory class with Kkh rehab. There were several children in the group and they taught about task focusing, sitting down, raising hands when asking questions, money etc.Hi

After entering p1, I met up his FT and AED about two weeks after school started. Shared with them about his quirks and how they can deal with him. I worked very closely with the FT so that I am always aware of what's happening in school. I also did parent volunteer to know his classmates. I think it does wonders when the classmates know who is his mother. Coz he didn't talk much in p1, these classmates also acted as 'spies' for me. Hahaha.
During the first year, an AED sat in the class during FT's lessons. I guess his performance is still ok coz I didn't hear from the AED after that. I heard other ASD kids would be pulled out for social groups therapy.
Yes, he's continuing with his OT, ST and occasionally social groups with kkh rehab.
