My view is that if it is not possible to find a suitable holding site near to the original site (which is in Bishan), MOE should allow those affected students have the option to change to other IP JCs which are nearer to their homes.pearlly:
Hi parents, I'm an education reporter for The Straits Times. The completion date of the new JC will be pushed back from mid-2018 to end-2019. The holding site for the JC has also changed, from Bishan Street 14 to Mount Sinai (near Holland Road).
These changes mean that current Year 2 and Year 3 students will not get to study at the new JC campus at all, and may have to make new travelling plans with the change made to the holding site.
Any affected parents here? Do contact me at [email protected] or PM me. Cheers. -
Thank you for your support, woodgrove. I know your dd is from St Nic, right? It seems that I am the only affected parent in SCGS. :?

Most of the affected students are expected to be from St Nic & Catholic High since their school are located near to Bishan & quite a number of them are staying around that area.
It should not be too bad for SCGS students as the temp site at Mt Sinai is actually not far from SCGS. In fact some SCGS students may even benefit as the distance is shorter compared to traveling to Bishan.
Also I don’t think there is any MRT station at the new site yet that is within walking distance.
We attended the talk by the new JC principal. According to her, the temp site was carefully chosen (formal RJC) and will be renovated for our girls. -

Think about it. When a building is refurbished for a Temporary 3 year purpose how good can it be? In fact, one of the parent queried the new principal on the quality of the facilities and her reply was something along the line of \"I didn't say it would be top-rate facilities but I said it would have what a jc should have\" -
Frankly, I am more concern on the quality of the teachers which is a big unknown. But I understand your point that all parents are disappointed that our girls in sec 2 and 3 could not enjoy the new facilities. For the sec 1 girls, it is also disruptive to change campus after getting use to the temp site. Unfortunately, there is nothing we could do about the delay. So at the meantime, just stay positive.

I understand a petition effort is being led by some cat high parents so hope that will succeed.

Dear Parents of CHS, SCGS, SNGS,
We are a group of CHS, SCGS and SNGS parents, frustrated by the latest MOE decision of the new IP JC location. The decision is irrational, irresponsible and lack of transparency. MOE owe us an answer.
If you have the same feeling, please join our group. Send your email to [email protected], we will contact you via email. Let's group together to seek MOE explanation.
We hope to receive email from CHS, SNGS and SCGS parents only. Thanks.
Rgds,
Administrator of the Group, HS -
We have been thinking about choice of secondary schools and are considering SCGS.
We want a good school that places an emphasis on values like kindness and compassion, and an environment that develops excellence but also cares for weaker students. Overall, a school that cares and nurtures rather than one which is super stressful and competitive.
Dear parents, current and former students, please share the following info. Thank you so much.
1. Academics
Is the academic work load manageable?
Do the teachers pile on a lot of homework or is most academic work done in school?
Is the school a place where weaker students are given the help and the time to cope with the material?
Do stronger students help weaker students? Is there a strong sense of community and togetherness?
Does the school insist that students drop their weaker subjects?
2. Time and schedule
In a typical week, what time do the girls finish school?
Are there extra programmes or projects that require students to stay back in school after classes end?
3. CCA
How many CCAs do students have to take?
Do you pick a CCA based on interest or do you have to be selected?
Is the CCA work load manageable?
How many days a week do you have to commit?
4. Programmes
What programmes are there for character development and spiritual growth?
What about for student exchanges, internationalisation, global awareness, etc?
5. Culture and environment
Are the girls disciplined and well-behaved?
Does the school emphasise good values like kindness, compassion, generosity,
helping others, etc?
Does the school have a competitive or cooperative culture?
Does the school have a caring and nurturing environment?
Is the emphasis on high achievement or making sure that no child gets left behind?
Is there a good balance between academics, CCA, time with friends and family?
In general, did/do you feel mostly feel stress and pressure, or feel a sense of balance and well-being?
6. Any other comments?
Thank you so much for your time. -
Stylo:
Hello Stylo, thank you so much for considering SCGS as one of your choices. I am a current student at SCGS and i hope the following will answer any queries. do feel free to clarify further! We have been thinking about choice of secondary schools and are considering SCGS.

1. Academics
\tYes, the academic workload is manageable. Especially in Secondary 1. The teachers here are definitely caring. Deadlines for homeworks are fairly reasonable, and teachers do extend if they feel that that week was too packed. Students going for frequent competitions are also given separate deadlines in order for them to have adequate time to complete their homework. Weaker students are well taken care of. A teacher may pull out students that they feel are lagging slightly behind in terms of grades and give them a moral push. Stronger students do help weaker students. I myself have friends who are the elites in the school and they are really willing to help you in any way they can! We do not do streaming till the end of secondary 2 so all subjects are compulsory! Streaming, however, is done based on results. (You can clarify further if needed)
2. Time and schedule
\tDismissal times are as follow: Monday: 2.40pm, Wednesday: 2.00pm, Tuesday/Thursday/Friday: 1.50pm (in upper secondary, students are released at 2.40pm on fridays) There are certain remedial/supplementary lessons that are required either for the whole class or selected students. However, I don't really remember myself attending many remedial classes in lower secondary.
3. CCA
\tEach student is to have 1 compulsory CCA (can take up more if she wants to!). CCAs may be changed between years but are strongly not advisable. Choosing of CCA is based on interest but some do have auditions to get in (for eg. basketball) as there are limited spots available. There isnt much CCA “workload” to manage but time commitment is something that you may want to take note of before choosing a CCA. CCA timings vary across all of them. But a very rough outline will be: Sports: 3 days a week, Performing Arts: 2 days (maybe 3 during the competition season), UGs/Clubs and societies: 1 day (may go up to 2 or 3 days during competition season)
4. Programmes
\tBy these programmes, do you mean leadership positions? If so, some examples include Peer Leaders, SC Ambassadors, Prefects etc. Or if by programmes you mean school events? If so, one example is Garden Voices where students showcase their writings. There are plenty of student exchange programmes all year round. Trips to the USA, UK, China, Hong kong, Australia and many more are available.
5. Culture and environment
\tYes, we are rather well-behaved!! Our school values are: Sincerity, Courage, Generosity, Service. The school is generally not very competitive but girls being girls, there will of course be some competitiveness. The teachers here are very caring and willing to help. I myself am from SC primary but i was able to make so many new friends, whether or not from SC Primary. There really is this strong bond between each cohort. We have the annual SOTC (spirit of the class) competition which really tests the cohesiveness between each class! There is a good balance between acads, CCA and time with friends and family. Despite the (occasional) hectic schedule in SC, i feel, there really is a time to have fun and play hard, to be the children that we are. In general, SC has been a second home to me and it has made me feel welcomed without fail. There also is a Melaka trip in Secondary 1. This trip allows students to learn more about our school’s Peranakan heritage and at the same time, bond with their classmates.
6. Any other comments?
\tIn general, i really love SC. It has watched me grow, from a little child, to now, a teenager. It has been a pleasant 9 years in scgs and i am rather sorrowed that next year will be my last. My friends are generally my support pillar. The teachers are really concerned and i feel, that is what makes me feel so at home in SC~ I strongly recommend my school to any parent that is interested.
You are very much welcome.
