Elder boy said he saw a sch mate crying in sch ytd.

      😞

The worst is when... the rest of the group members got A, but one of them didnt make it...though putting in equally amount of hardwork...
Can imagine the disppointment they experience...

That's why the OP n the Q n A session is so critical...makes hell lot of difference...
During the sch hols, elder boy was going back to sch very often for OP practices. Apparently, there were sch mates who did not go for such practices on a frequent basis.

They presented it in front of other grps which would give their comments for improvements...while they would hv to stay bk n do likewise for other groups...

Sorry I have to ask my question here, I dont have enough of \"kp$\" to start a new topic πŸ˜•

                NUS or SUTD?

hello, recently Ive been awarded the SUTD (EPD) 1 year undergraduate scholarship. Ive not yet received the offer from NUS mechanical engineering, but my rank point is 80 (H2 PCM h1Econs ) , so I think I might stand a chance of getting in.

Since young, ive always wanted to get into NUS, and that goal has been what pulled me through jc.

I chose mech eng as first choice because ive always been fascinated by how things work, in particular the mechanics aspect. Also im very into physics.

Ive not known much about SUTD till this year. After attending the SUTD openhouse and tea session, I realised that I really like the hands on and fun curriculum. especially when I get to built my own stuff and get to study physics chem and bio. i was quite sad when I had to drop bio in jc.

However the curriculum in SUTD is so broad, and packed into 3.5 years. Although its rigorous, im afraid that there wont be enough time to go deep enough into the engineering fundamentals. NUS, otoh, is 4 years and also rigorous. And it is not as broad. so from this I guess NUS has more depth in the key engineering fundamentals than SUTD. Or am I wrong?

Im afraid this might be a disadvantage in my employment prospects if I choose SUTD, being a jack of all traits and a master of none. (is this true? how important is specialisation?)

Also isit true, holding all other variables constant, that a SUTD summa cum laude graduate will be viewed second class to a NUS first class honours graduates in terms of employment? (sorry if this offends anyone, but this is just an opinion from one of my relatives, who graduated from NUS, and has testified that the NUS brand name has helped open many doors for her)

And also I heard that NUS mechanical engineering lectures can be dry and boring. Is this also true? Are there any fun, hands on activities in nus mechanical engineering course? Is the Design Centric Prog one of them?

And are the Profs in NUS FoE caring?

I hope to land a job with Changi airport group. which school will stand me a better chance, assuming I give my best in both schools?

Also SUTD does not have the CCA which im passionate about 😞 . I spoke to one of the staff about it and he says that SUTD would willingly support me if I were to start my own cca. That's great, but im afraid I might not be able to juggle starting a cca and the school's workload. Seems like joining NUS would be the easier option to pursue my favourite cca.

Also will i face any difficulties as a girl if I go into mech eng? heard that sutd epd female to male ratio is larger.

And one more point. I live in Yishun. So travelling to SUTD is kinda tedious. NUS is more convenient as I can put up in my granny's place in amk.

If you were me, which would u choose?

Please help 😞 im really torn between these two schools, and I have to accept the SUTD scholarship offer by 27/4. Any advice and opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou πŸ™‚

For engineering, NUS wins by a longshot, even NTU beats SUTD if you were to focus solely on mech engin.

SUTD has its strengths, having a broad curriculum means that one can quickly apply things to engineering to literally get things moving. But they lose out in the depth of which both NUS and NTU has. This means that you can make the up for the shortfall on your own by studying in-depth on your own. But not many people will have that sort of discipline. For NUS and NTU, you learn alot of theories in your first 2 years. Year 3 and 4 the application starts with still lots of theories.

It really depends where you're headed as well, if you are thinking of pursuing post-grad or anything academic related, NUS is the obvious choice. If you intend to start working, maybe SUTD could be a better choice.

Specialisation can be really important sometimes. Being an expert in your field means that you are really sought after and not many people can replace you. If you are a jack-of-all-trades, you are literally replaceable by a larger group of people.

IMO, this is just my personal opinion, SUTD seems abit too ambitious. One look at the curriculum for EPD and it feels like there's not enough math. Only 2 maths mods under their freshmore curriculum, neither of which are engineering math. The EPD mods are a mix of civil engineering, mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering. IMO, that's being wayyy too ambitious. And also not enough depth at all. You would find these mods as second year modules for NTU students in engineering. At best, early year 3 modules. Point being, its pretty basic.

It seems that SUTD wants their students to not be workers and employees, rather they want them to be creators and entrepreneurs. Designing and building their own products, hence bringing all these disciplines together. but the obvious flaw is what if you dont make it big? It seems like an all-or-nothing gamble. If a coy wants a mechanical engineer, they probably would prefer the NUS/NTU grad with more knowledge under his/her belt.

I agree with havok_ex's comments. If you want to practise as a mechanical engineer, go enroll in a proper mechanical engineering degree program. SUTD's EPD degree is accredited as a general engineering program, not as a mechanical engineering program.

Engineering subjects are by nature rather dry and heavy on mathematics (e.g. thermodynamics, fluid mechanics etc). There are only so many ways a lecturer can deliver the subject content. Much of the understanding and grasp of the material has to be done by the student after class. University is not JC or poly - students are expected to be independent learners and not be spoonfed; not everything can or will be covered in class - and there are usually questions set in the exams that go beyond the bare basics shown in the lecture powerpoint slides/tutorials. The 'A' grade will go to the student who can integrate and internalize the subject content. Many of the engineering modules have material that cut across semesters - one should not assume he/she can forget the material after the semester is over. Upper level modules will build upon the foundation set by the lower level modules.

Jobs wise, say with Changi Airport group, I think the determining factor on whether you can get an offer will largely depend on your interview performance (if your grades meet the company's cut-off criterion). Both NUS and SUTD have their Career Services which, as an undergraduate, you should actively tap on. These offices usually offer interview coaching classes to help students do well in interviews. Also, try to get an internship if you can with CAG before you graduate. Interns usually have a leg up on getting offers from the companies they interned with if they performed well during the internship.

My current tutee is from Hwe Chong , you get better when you are with a better influence and future connection. The problem is, you must learn to survive being a small fish in the big tank, inevitably there are stress ,it is about learning how to cope, even you are the small fish today , but that doesn’t mean you can’t be a big fish in the future.

Go for NJC if your dream school's just 30-40min away.

You won't regret it. Looks good on resume. Think long term. NJC not so \"cliquish\" like other JCs with affiliates.

Er...affiliates? Donch they have one whole lot moving in automatically thru IP?
Hi there, just to voice out my opinion πŸ™‚ NJ does not have affiliates, unlike say RJC with RI & RGS. NJ's IP cohorts themselves also do not have affiliates to any primary schools, so when the IP cohorts go to SH1 they already identify themselves as NJCians, hence no segregation of secondary schools.
