About learning ABCs, just to share what I did with my boy.

I was quite frantic when he still could not recognize all the 26 letters when he was already 3 years old. I bought lots of teaching materials to make it more interesting for him to learn. Here are some examples :

        http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3390/3228090435_7665149352.jpg\">

All the above made learning much more fun for him. When he was 3 years 3 months old, he could recognize most of the letters, except that he could not differentiate between b and d, and sometimes had problems with h and n. I cannot tahan, went ahead to teach him phonics, started with 2 letter words. I realize that he could recognize the b and d better when they are \"stuck\" together with other letters to form words πŸ˜‰

          Hi Tamarind

Thanks for sharing the material on recognizing the alphabets. Where did you get the dora alpha puzzle? I’m keen to get one. If you are not using and your kids are not playing, I don’t mind buying off you. My gal loves dora and I’m teaching her to recognize alphabets now.

          Thanks!

            Hi mummies,

My 26mth old can recognise all the letters in the alphabet (upper and lower case) and also sound them out pretty well (however, despite that, he still doesn't talk really well as compared to his peers).
I had tried introducing 'A' and 'T' makes 'AT', but he can only recognise them separately (eg, he can sound the 'C-A-T' in separate sounds, but he can't recognise it as the word cat).
He has very short attention span and usually after a while, he'll take the letters to play or scatter them all over the room.
What would you suggest for other activities for kids in this age group so that they can develop a love for reading other than just learning how to read?
(my ds1 knows how to read, but doesn't fancy reading at all  )
(we have done alot of ABCs activities similar to those suggested by Mincy, that's perhaps why he can relate to them individually rather well.)
            TIA.

              jedamum,
One suggestion is to make use of what your son likes most. For example, cars, trucks, dinosaurs, or animals ? My boy is crazy about dinosaurs. I bought him some dinosaur books with very nice pictures, and he tried very hard to read them, over and over again. In fact, he learns to read the complex names like Euoplocephalus, Quetzalcoatlus, etc. It is important to find books which have contents that interest our children.

My girl loves fairies, and she loves to read her Rainbow fairy books or any other books about fairies. She also loves arts and crafts and baking, so she is very interested to read such books.

After my kids learn to read, they will take any book from the shelves and read on their own. Not only books about dinosaurs or fairies, but any book that they find interesting. Learning to read is the first step. After a child can read well, he will naturally love to read.

As for learning \"at\", \"as\", etc, I printed these on separate pieces of paper. I read a 2 letter word, for example, \"at\", then asked my boy to pick up the correct piece. He has very short attention span, but this method really works on him, because it makes him really look at the words to find out which is the correct one. He messed up the papers, blew the papers away, dripped saliva on them, stepped on them. I let him do whatever he wants (except tearing the papers), but I persisted and taught him everyday. It still takes a lot of time and patience !

                        You are welcome.
But you have to check through their terms and conditions as I have not personally purchase from them before. Do share if your eventual transaction is successful.

My email notification is not working too. 😐
