I just started to do writing with my son after the childcare teacher raised the red flag that he was not writing worksheet in class. I was unawared that my son wasn’t doing any writing while his classmates are writing.He was reading book at one corner. I now downgraded to write single stroke/letter with him seen easier for him to handle than writing a whole word.To build up his confidence.

Not sure how to help him to learn how to write.

Hi Snow24! I used to clap and celebrate when my son did something well. After that, the whole family must clap for him. What you have done by starting slowly is good too.

How old is your child? If N2, still got a lot of time to prepare him. If you push too hard, maybe make him hate writing or scared of writing.

My son is K1. His clsssmates in childcare are already able to sit down and write one whole word A4 page writing independently by themselves.

Understand. During K1， most of childcare got writing work to do. Have you go for any OT? Maybe his small muscle got some problems.

Haha… My K1 NT girls are weak in writing too. I started them slowly on writing alphabets and only started simple writing now. Writing 1 A4 page is not achievable for them.


So, snow, just let your son develop slowly at his own pace. Just have to try out different methods of teaching to see which method suits him the most.

The OT din say he got small muscle problem.How do we detect if his small muscle has any problem or not?

His child care teacher however did feedback that he does not join in the outdoor activity and his gross motor skill is poor.

It's already detected? So just encourage him to do activities which use those muscles. I'm not sure what \"small muscles\" are, but if it affects fine motor skills, then activities which use fingers will help.

If he is less able than his friends, he will probably hold back from outdoor play as he may be afraid that he can't keep up, may fall, or may get teased. You could take him to playgrounds and get him to master various activities slowly to gain confidence and skills. My older girl had to try and be coached by us step by step before she could climb and use the playground equipment at our block, and her younger sister was always ahead of her. She was never very good at it, but at least we could see improvement. Teachers generally won't have the time and patience to do that kind of slow coaching.

I noticed a lot of child care center like to tag a child that no so cooperate with the teacher as Autism. So that can kick them off.

I like to think that there are two sides to a coin. There may be schools who do not have the necessary support and would not like to hassle to handle such children, and so this may become an easy excuse.

However, there may also be schools which are able to identify certain traits and are trying to be helpful to get parents to go for professional help early. Their intention could be for the child to be placed in a suitable environment where learning can be effective. Afterall, a mainstream environment may not suit all children with special needs.
