      Heyya Addoil,

Forgot to mention one more thing, errrm...
i don't think there will come to a point where
you have to do 2 digits with another 2 digits
addition with the use of fingers. Means i don't
think you wud need a 3rd hand or the use of
toes anytime soon to assist the counting, for
the worry you're having.
It can only be that addition of such nature will
only be with a second number - up to the number 9.

      ie. 11+9=____
In this case, 2 hands are still enough to use
to get the answer if child were to count using
fingers. If via written workings, then it shud
      read :

      >T U
      >1 1
      + 9
      ____

      ____

Which in this case, again back to basics... always
add up the units first > 1+9=10, followed by adding
up the numbers in the tens column >
1+1=2 (extra number 1 carried over from the units answer of 10)

Okay, now lets say you're worried about the
double digit addtion procedure. Meaning... say
      the question is 11+11=_____ ?

For this question, the working shud read :
      >T U
      >1 1
      +1 1
      ____

      ____

So, it wud be back to, adding the units first which in
this case is just 1+1=2 and likewise for the numbers
aligned in the tens column, right?

      No worries there, mama!
As long there is the initial introduction of the basic
mathematical concepts, at an early start, rest assured
the child would grasp the concepts in time for Pri 1 Maths!

      :celebrate:

        Heyya Addoil,

Yohhh! Your eldest boy now just 4 years old!
Don't place your undue worries on the advance
stages of Maths, dear. Focus your attention and
energertic fun on clearing the step to instill basic
Math skill into him. With young children, teach one
thing at a time.. fun ways. So it won't stress him
out that he is expected to know everything all at
once. Take it easy.. You hang in there.. You'd do
great, slow and steady. 4 years old is the perfect
        age to begin your introduction!

Before you begin the number bonds... Ensure your boy
knows and fully understands the quantity and written symbols
of 1-20 (perfectly, even better!). Means he knows the value of
each representation of numbers from 1-20. ie. He shud be able
to give you 17 pebbles when you ask him for it and he shud
preferably also know how to write the number 17 too, when
you ask him to write it. πŸ˜„

Writing numbers same as letters, start from top to bottom.
Not from bottom top. Proper stroke of writing is equally
important to observe.. this will avoid those mirror image
        problems.

        :celebrate:

PS : Checkmate method is a method of checking the answers..
backwards. This shud be done only when child is already very very
efficient with his addition sums. Students who are able to do the
checkmate method can check math sums on their own without
parent supervision. But in your case, you shouldn't worry about
it at the moment. Your time will come! Heheh! πŸ˜‰

            Hi Bud,

An update. I was doing more or less than questions to both ds & dd. Surprise, surprise, ds when have difficulty comprehending the question using my method, he simply switch to your checkmate method to see if has indeed understand the questions correctly. Heee.. my autopilot son

The more or less than questions better nail it right by P1. Never mind which method. The question keeps on appearing through out P1 - P4 (dd's level). The only difference is that the number just gets bigger & bigger.

              Heyya EN,

              Hip hip hurray for ds!!!
              :celebrate:
              :celebrate:
              :celebrate:

              I loved your update!
You nailed it rite on the head, bebeh..

I laughed aloud when i read the line that said.
\"The more & less qns better nail it right by P1!\"
That's all parents here need to know in a nutshell!

Yes! Yes! The numbers get bigger awrite!
If P2 was ever stuck when she sees the BIIIGG
numbers i just ask her to imagine the question with
only the first number in front, ie if 4321... just take
the 4 first, to understands whats needed
to answer for the question - minus or plus.

I suppose when the numbers get bigger,
the children can get even more confused,
if they have not mastered the question by then..

Yes, i agree. Whatever the method, as long it
works for our kiddies. There isn't one fix-it
              method for everything. πŸ˜‰

I'm happy you're happy.. At least i thought you
sounded quite pleased with ds with the observation
that ds was capable of automatically applying the
              checkmate method.

Quite stress hor, see children struggle with what
seemingly is like an easy question. The poor kiddies.
So, for me i do jump for joy at every achievement P2
makes in her work, like being more careful and reali
reading to understand.. i can tell she puts in a lot of
effort to get things right and tell her to be proud of that.

                Heyya Addoil,

                Hey, no worries yeah..
You ARE in this forum for a reason,
right? You're also a kiasu parent lah.
                Heheheee..

I do not mind explaining to you as long
as it helps. Its a pleasure. Aniwaes, on
early mental prepz, its okay of course.
If your child can absorb more concepts
faster, then no worries, its a good thing.
As long as, you start first things first.
                Step by step.

Why not share what he can do for now,
and maybe i can help you follow up with
the next step for you to introduce your
son to? If you're ok with that, I'm all
                ears... πŸ˜‰

I'm still finding time to upload the necessary
resources for you. Sorry k. I'll try get it done
as soon as i can. Hope you don't mind..

Btw, is your child attending pre-school already?

                  buds:

Tamarind was sweet to provide a
tutorial for me to upload some info
here, so i think thru this way it can
                  help parents here visualize better..
Cos even as i explain in text here,
some parents may still not be able
to visualize what the heck i'm talking
about. So, visual aide wud be better!
Just like how the graphic tutorial from
                  tamarind helped me! Heeeheee..
                  Thanks, tam!
                  buds,
                  You are welcome !

Thank you for your very helpful advise about teaching maths. You are a really awesome mommy with a big heart to share your knowledge !

                    Heyya tamarind,

                    You inspired me.

When i was first recommended this forum,
i came across your many contibutions in
                    various threads, encouraging parents with
the how's and the do's. And thats when i
decided, ok. This will be my virgin forum!
Hehee.. all this time i have real people to
have conversations with so i never knew
the netiquette. Thanks to you and other
kind users, i now know. Chief too played
a part in this decision. I read all his posts
on threads interesting to me and i found
him, just in his observation, diplomatic and
enlightening... and as moderator i felt i cud
be comfortable with his knowledge and know
he can keep this forum friendly for all users.

I suppose i will try to be even extra mindful
with how i portray my experiences. I for one
however, do agree with you that though it was
kinda hurtful for a user to use words in sarcasm
                    and a-know-all-attitude on quoting others'
quotes, i try to keep a positive mind over
                    things and reflecting is calming...

It never crossed my mind that to post msgs,
personally attacking one's character is possible
as there are real people behind these posts we
read. I do feel terribly misunderstood (can't help
it, really... 😞 )but i want to move on. Never mind what
happened, what goes around comes around (2fold at times!)
and i too see it the way you do, that we shudn't do to others
what we don't want others to do to us.. Negative energies
like such is not beneficial for myself or other users.
I hope to be here to share and care if there are parents
who reali need to share their experiences and share their
knowledge. In short more friends.. doesn't matter like
minded or not. It'll be good to have different opinions,
as different people have different perspectives and we
may have been biased in our thinking prior to hearing
someone else's view on a similar train of thought.
There will always be 2 sides to a story..

I'm glad i got acquainted with you and do know that i'm
behind you (all the way!) with all stuff fun and creative
learn thru' play for all the children out there. πŸ˜„

I wud like to quote sashimi on his tongue in cheek
phrase : Sometimes, we are too educated for our
                    own good. Ahak!

                    *sashimi > hope you don't mind.. πŸ˜‰

buds, if the world is made of more people who think and act like yourself, it would be a much nicer place to live in. I myself have been highly inspired by your posts and look forward to every new one. It’s just that as our community grows and when people have less time to read to fully understand the context that underpins each post, they fall back to their own convictions to fill in the missing gaps and create their own intepretations on the posts which may have never been intended by the authors.

My goal is to be fair to all posters - I don’t delete or modify messages in the posts, and the only ones I have deleted are duplicate messages and the only text I have modified are titles of posts to at least get some semblance of organization in the Forums. This speaks volumes of the quality of the posts that we have gotten this far - everyone have been discussing and sharing their experiences in a most amicable fashion for the last one year, until in the last few days. Today marks the first time I had to close a thread, but even so, I have no reason to delete any post.

So like Shylyn mentioned in another thread, we have to learn to ignore and get over criticisms, especially those which we know are said without basis. No need to respond to them, either. If we spend our lives making sure we satisfy everyone, we’ll need several more lifetimes than what we are already blessed with.

                        buds,
 I am sure there are many more mommies who are inspired by you !

I guess it is because of my profession, that I prefer to write \"step by step instructions\", and \"detailed teaching methods and teaching plan\" in my blogs and in forums. I find it much more useful and constructive compared to those \"Here's the link. You can read all about it here\" kind of information. Your step by step instructions have been very helpful to many parents !

We all come to the forum to \"de-stress\", not to add more stress, right ? We are all here so that we can have a good chat with each other, not to argue to death about differences in opinions !
