Congratulations to all who got into APS. Though this matter has been settled the way we all wanted but I feel the need to post what I had prepared prior to the good news. This is to clear some doubts and that parents applying in future might learn a thing or two from my experience…


Firstly,for the records, APS registered the 151th applicant around 3:15pm so the last 3 applicants timings made no difference for those within 1-2km. Moreover, with only 11 vacancies left after the morning session they should be prepared that there might not be anything left for them later in the day. Even for us within 1 km we were prepared for that. I would think that these parents should have monitored the situation more closely if they did not want to be caught in this situation. It was out of goodwill that the school informed them but given the short timeframe and large number of applicants, it is just not possible to get to everyone as soon as they would wanted.

Secondly, I would like to explain why we had not applied earlier but at 3:50pm. Given the balloting history and good reviews from mummies of children from APS, we were prepared that it might be oversubscribed even for those within 1 km. Thus, hubby and I decided that we will monitor the situation till the last day and apply only if there were more than 10 vacancies after the morning session. Well, that was what happened and so I proceeded to withdraw from another school once the afternoon session began. I reached APS at 3pm and was given a Q number which made me the 7th (out of 11 slots). I was waiting for my number to be called but due to some administration lapse, (the Qnumber board was not updated), the 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th applicants registered before me. When the staff realised that, she did apologised. But the worst part was when she informed me that if I applied I would trigger a ballot for all 151 applicants! I was put into the most difficult spot I have ever been in my life. To apply and disrupt the lives of the 151 parents or to go look for another school. I quickly called my hubby whom was on the way after fetching my girl. Upon his arrival I conveyed the massage to him again and he said to go ahead as the chances were high (with only 2 other applicants) and even if we failed at least we tried. Immediately I went in to submit my form and by then it was 3:50pm. At that moment we just had to follow our hearts and did what we thought was the best for our child.

In fact, our preparations for her entry to P1 started more than a year ago when we started looking around for PV opportunities. Had AP opened up for that we would have definitely signed up. Like someone said, it was a great commitment as I remembered going for PV despite being very sick so as to clock the 40 hours ( hubby was overseas). It was indeed a tough decision to withdraw after securing a place but I guess all parents want only the best for their child. Who wants the 2nd best if the best seems like a possibility? Well, to parents who wish to enrol their children in popular schools, my advice is to be well prepared for the stress and competition as well as the disappointment if things don’t go their well. Also, monitor the situation closely and have all your backup plans ready. We actually went to look at all the schools within 2 km even before registeration started so as to list our preferences should we fail if balloting occurs. Like the saying goes ‘Hope for the best but be prepared for the worst!’

Thanks jojo170809 for making a big effort in explaining to us which you can easily be silent about being the 152th applicant. If I am you, I will also feel bad. Any decision from us during the registration is all at the best interest of our children. Luckily god pity us and being touched by our sincerity in getting into ALPS, so all of us finally got in.


I can feel the stress of those parents who need to undergo balloting tomorrow. Good luck to all of you!

I must thank the ALPS staff for calling all the 151 parents to ease our tense yesterday. That call in the morning really makes our day. Thanks for the efforts.

That shouldn't come as a surprise. A visit to the Singapore Pool outlet during the weekend would have generated the same conclusion

Hmmm. Not really a good comparison here. I regard those that buy TOTO & BIG SWEEP as having lesser Risk appetite even though the chances of striking is low. Those that buy Soccer bets as higher Risk taker even though the chances of winning is high.

Hi jojo, after reading, my thoughts were that majority of pple time their applications for whatsoever reasons...... so you were right to do what u think is best for your child
