I think the highlighted portion is incorrect. This is taken from NUS Office of Admission :

Applicants will be considered for admission based on the strength of their academic achievements and additional interviews/tests if required. Applicants would need to obtain good passes in the following subjects:

Best four content subjects (i.e. 3 H2 and 1 H1 content-based * subjects, with at least 1 content subject to be from a contrasting discipline), and
either General Paper (GP) or Knowledge Inquiry (KI) subject taken in the same sitting with the H2 content-based subjects, and
H1 Project Work

* Please note that H1 Mother-Tongue Language subject (MTL) cannot be considered in-lieu of a H1 content-based subject.

HCL is equivalent to H1 MTL therefore it cannot replace a H1 subject.

Computation of UAS example : Total 3 H2 + H1 + GP + PW = 70 pts

With HCL Distinction (10 pts) computation : 70 pts x 0.9 = 63 pts then add HCL 10pts = 73 pts.

So HCL helps student to increase 3pts.

This is what I understand from school talk regarding UAS computation.

The explanation given by DS' school is slightly different from your computation.
Total 3H2 (20 points each) + 3H1 (10 points each) = 90 points

Taking your example:

Assume a student score 70 points for his 3H2 and 3H1 and a distinction for HCL which is 10 points.
His total points will be computed as: (70points+10points) x 0.9 = 72 points (which will be 2 points addition to the total score).

Assume a more outstanding student scoring 85 points for his 3H2 and 3H1 and a distinction for HCL which is 10 points.
His total points will be computed as: (85points + 10points) x 0.9 = 85.5points (which will be 0.5points addition to the total score).

You can see that HCL score becomes insignificant when the student's results for the 3H2 3H1 is outstanding.

Some personal observation.


GP is useful. It hones the students' critical thinking and writing abilities. I find that this is what sets the JC students apart from poly grads. Students have almost 2 years to hone their thinking and writing skills. It prepares most JC students for academic writing in the uni.

Personally, I feel that poly students should go through a similiar course or subject like GP during their poly years. Unfortunately the poly's curriculum are not designed as such. There may be some Business Communications course but that's like only for 3-4 months. How to hone one's writing skills during that short period of time?

PW, whilst it may be the bane of many JC students, does have its merits. Because poly students work in groups (and in different groups within 1 semester; and we are looking at 6 sems in total), they learn to work with people they like/don't like, and learn to be resourceful.

If one does not have good group dynamics, chances of not doing well is highly possible. Because poly students are exposed to multiple project work, from what I understand, the powers that be decided that JC students should also be exposed to PW as well. And that's how PW came about for JC students (or so i've been told). In this regard, because poly students have 3 years to hone their project management and presentation skills, they have this advantage when they enter uni.

Generally, most students tend to be lost in the first semester, regardless whether they are JC or poly students. But after the 1st sem, most learn to adapt and tend to be better assured or find their footing after a while.

Thought I share the above based on my observations after all these years.

In both computation method, it looks like distinction in HCL will help increase the UAS score. It's time to push DS further. :nunchuk:

Pirated said that PW is different than RE. But seriously, is there any other differences other than can’t select team members? RE in Year 1 also can’t select team members. Year 2 can select own team members. I don’t know about Year 3 though.

Yes, Pen88n... yr computation is correct...

HCL will only be computed in UAS if it helps to raise the scores of UAS...the total UAS will then re-scale by 90% ...
Examples computed by gal's sch...shows that HCL grade only make a small difference in the decimal places in UAS ( if the results for 3H2 + 3H1 is outstanding)

i think it depends on the choice of courses ba...as it is based on competition amongst applicants for the year...

Every course also has its own 10th n 90th percentile grade profile for 3 H2 +1 H1 ....
