2015 PSLE Discussion and Strategies

Hi. Are your kids having prelim next week? Mine is.

Yes, mine too! -
jothuat47:
If there is a visible trend, MOE should review future PSLE oral to standardize the papers. None of other papers has this inconsistency and 'heng suay' factor. It will be a fairer exam if there is no two different set of questions. That said, what's the whole point of having a standardized exam without standardized questions? :frustrated:
I can understand your frustrations but it is difficult to implement standardized oral examination unless we have enough resources for all the pupils to sit for their mother tongue oral on one day and EL oral on another day. Even then, the mother tongue paper will also be different and the Paper 1 (compo) are also marked by different examiners. Sad to say but there's no \"totally fair\" examination.
The most important thing now is to not let this oral thingy affect your kid, it is just the beginning of the PSLE exam. Jiayou! -
Can correction tape be used during psle?
-
3R:
Can correction tape be used during psle?
Highly discouraged.
But at this juncture too late to withdraw use for children who have been using it all the time. The withdrawals from not being able to use may cause anxiety to the child during the exams.
DD's school disallowed use from mid P4 onwards, which I felt was a good move. This way the children don't hafta go cold turkey but instead gradually move on to carrying out written work without dependency on correction tapes. DD (and me!) saved $ and also motivated to complete written work more carefully. -
No mention of correction tapes being allowed or disallowed during PSLE in DD’s school. In any case, I still prepared enough refill for DD though I told her to use a ruler to cancel neatly instead of reaching automatically for the correction tape.

it's great that the school stepped in to discourage the use of correction tape. it's still early at P4 since there are 2 years more to go before PSLE.3R:

I've explained to my daughter not to be dependent on it...instead, learn to use ruler to neatly cancel what is unwanted. -
So how is the child going to do when an error needs to be erased/corrected?

Same here, I told my dc to use it sparingly, maybe only when there is limited space to write. More like a comfort food. I hope tts ok. -

if it is a word or two, strike out neatly with a pen.
if it is a sentence, then use a ruler to cancel. -

Yes, it's awesome indeed, janet88. I've was not in favour of its use in the first place aniwaes. Having the school implement similar condition greatly accelerated the initiative on less dependency for students who cannot live without it, in time for PSLE.janet88:
Same for me too. We cancel neatly with ruler.I've explained to my daughter not to be dependent on it...instead, learn to use ruler to neatly cancel what is unwanted.
Some Math and language teachers have affirmed that it's better to cancel so they can see the mistakes. They are there to reflect your ideas (for English) and train of thought that they could go back to and for math, good for checking purposes after correction.
Besides its not just PSLE. For O levels it's a straight no on use of correction tape. The earlier the children get off the habit to use it, the lesser the struggle.
Different strokes for different folks.
We chose not to use it at all and I don't buy them at all either. Best decision for us. My children have no withdrawals, are more careful and have been conscientious with having neat work for their written activities.
