How does the CL or HCL play a role in the U admission?
The sch mentioned the U admission ranking is based on 3H2 + 3H1 (ie GP, PW and the least grade of H2 subject or just the grade of the H1 subject). -

My daughter is affected too. She has definitely decided against FM because she says she doesn't want to narrow her subject choices. She is already complaining about having to choose only 4! Taking FM will mean only 1 science, and she can't even decide which 2 to keep at the moment (actually the choice is Bio/Phy a she will definitely keep Chem).
Yes, PW remains.jtoh:
PW is still there? Bummer.
So how FM fit into the requirements of having 1 contrasting subject in the 4 core subjects? Will students who take FM be able to take only one more science, given that Math is compulsory?
If one takes MA, FM, Sc (CM or PH or BI), then the contrasting subject would be GEO or EC or other Arts/Humanities subject, depending on what the sch offers. -
For those not keen in FM, it is status quo though.

Thanks starlight. I wonder how that plays into uni admissions as the students will only be doing 1 science.

MA and FM are considered as Sc subjects.
So students doing double maths and a Sc subject (CM, PH or BI) are literally triple Sc students. -

UAS counts only 3H2s + 1H1 + GP + PW. You can choose to add CL/HCL grades over and above these 6 subjects if they add to your overall UAS. Usually the difference is just a couple of points and only if you score an A.How does the CL or HCL play a role in the U admission?

I fail to see how CL/HCL grades add to UAS.
Does this mean a pass in CL/HCL would do? -

Yes, I understand that. But they're doing 2 Math and 1 Science (defined as bio, physics and chem). So for uni science courses they will be restricted to those requiring only one science. I suppose many courses have that option. But quite a few would require 2 sciences (chem + physics or chem + bio). That would be out for them. I guess they have to decide their subject combinations based on possible uni courses they're interested in.jtoh:

Agreed.
My dd is more inclined to do Arts/Humanities subjects :yikes: -

To gain entry into local unis, you just need to pass your second language.jtoh:

CL/HCL is not computed into UAS. The only time it is computed is if by adding the score you actually improve your UAS score. That typically only happens if you score an A in CL/HCL and the addition to your UAS is only a couple of points. In other words, not much difference. And it is automatically computed for you.
So if your chinese is weak, just pass will do. Scoring a B makes not difference to your UAS.
