Not surprise. Toyoko inn Is cheap and gd and the Nagoya location good. Members can book earlier than public. As I am member I normally book earlier so can get room. By 2 days 1 night, I assume you will only have one half day after u arrive from Tokyo. If you leave Nagoya the next morning for takayana, the first half day is all u will have. We used the tourist bus to go to the various places in Nagoya like Nagoya castle, Toyota museum. We spend a good part of the day. Almost late afternoon/evening before we were done as the kids enjoyed the technoland at Toyota museum. And we visited the interior of Nagoya castle, not just take photos from outside. Half day will be too short I think. But if u leave Nagoya in the afternoon, then maybe can and u will have 2 half days.Dnls_mum, is 2 days 1 night at Nagano do-able?

There might be charter flights during the holiday for flying direct fr Sin to Hokkaido by SQ. by usually these r charter by travel agents so u might need to check papers or call up agents specialising in Japan Tours. we love Prime travel but more for their self drive packages though their group tours are known to be excellent as well. Anyway No self driving packages or tours during winter in hokkaido.
We went last Oct flying SQ to Osaka stayed for 3 nights then fly by jetstar to Hokkaido for 12 days. we still can self drive then. U can also do Jetstar all the way hokkaido via osaka. -
I would like to try DIY for a 2 week holiday in Tokyo in January.
Can seasoned Tokyo travellers pls share on how to go about planning for a holiday (for a family of 4 adults). Is 2 weeks too long just for Tokyo, shld I combine with Osaka?
Pls provide info on -
1. Accommodation - recommended hotels or service apartments?
2. Places of interest
3. Subway transport
4. How to move around
Many thanks in advance.

Yes. 2 wks just in Tokyo may be too long unless you are planning to hop from one shopping mall to another.I would like to try DIY for a 2 week holiday in Tokyo in January.

You may explore going out of Tokyo, say to the nearby cities/town such as Yokohama for Chinatown, Cup Noodles Museum, Lake Kawaguchiko for Mt Fuji.
You may venture further to the west to Nara (for deer wandering on the streets in Nara deer park), Osaka (for food and Castle) and even Hiroshima (for oysters, food, and the Atomic Bomb Peace Memorial Park). -

If going to Kawaguchiko, Adults may also want to check out Fuji Q highland, for super scary roller coasters if interested!

Agree with Starlight. 2 weeks is too long in Tokyo. You didn't mention if you have been to Japan. Assuming no, then places you can also go include Osaka and Kyoto. It depends on what you like. To find out what each city offers, check out Japan Guide and see what you like.

Very easy and straight forward but the shinkansen stops at Shin Osaka instead of Osaka. You can take the normal JR train from Shin Osaka to Osaka.
The time table is available, try Japan rail East website or something. Else http://www.hyperdia.com gives gd train info. -
I am so happy to find this thread!
We are going for a F&E trip to Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka this Dec.
I am still planning the itinerary, am considering a day trip to Nara. If we are based in Kyoto, would you suggest that we go Nara or Miyajima or both? By the way, we are family of 2 adults and one teenage boy.
