It depends on how much time you have. Miyajima is further than Nara from Kyoto. You can do Nara as a day trip, but I don't advise that for Miyajima. You should at least stay a night in Hiroshima or Miyajima if you plan to visit Miyajima from Kyoto. Better still if you can stay another night in Okayama along the way. Then you can also visit Okayama garden, the canal and also drop by Himeji along the way.I am so happy to find this thread!
We are going for a F&E trip to Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka this Dec.
I am still planning the itinerary, am considering a day trip to Nara. If we are based in Kyoto, would you suggest that we go Nara or Miyajima or both? By the way, we are family of 2 adults and one teenage boy. -

Thank you for the quick response and advice. Got it.

For those keen to diy, u may be overwhelmed by info. But fear not, read the travel guide books, itineraries fr travel agencies etc to shortlist the places u want to visit.
From there, then u source how to get there, hotel etc. -

I see. I read somewhere mobile hotspots are not common in Japan and I am hoping to be able to use Google map when we are out exploring.

We bought the prepaid data SIM card Iijmio which has 2GB data valid for 3 months. Cost JPY4,100.
Now they have a new one which is for 1GB for 30 days. -
If you need data for multiple devices then you may consider this :

We rented the standard pocket wifi for 14 days at 7650yen last December . We were able to use 3-4 devices at any 1 time. We managed to use it at ulu part of Hokkaido too !wonderm:
