        德明堂 (new hall)
is there a name for the old hall which was used by the table tennis team for practice ?
德明堂 was the old school hall. The new hall was 勇忠堂.

There was no Confucius Statue in the old campus. It was in the new campus probably due to the school's name which came from 儒家's thought of 《《大学》》: 大学之道, 在明明德。With my limited translation, it means: The way of Great knowledge, is to expound virtue character (光明正大的品德).

I am not sure the StoryY.

          besty:

I am already a year too late in doing this. My ds is already in DHS. My sister's Ds is taking psle this year so I am trying to finish my 'unfinished biz' hoping to help her make a good decision..
In a way, I am hoping to get some reassurance knowing DHS's IP program is solid. I don't hv that confidence now. I feel DHS lack of a certain school spirit which motivates students (in general) to want to soar, to make DHS the best. I say this because I feel my boy is rather relaxed in his school life even thou he joins everything he cld join as a Y1 student. Yet he is above average in his academics. I was hoping to put him in a school where the school environment will push him to excel. Or he will feel such stiff competition that he will automatically become more on the ball. He strives best under pressure and stiff competition.
No, it's still not late...( in fact, it's easier if not under DSA intake)...Since yr DS is only in Yr1 now, there are still 5 more yrs to go..if u think yr child is not getting the best in DHS...(since u think that he doesnt strive under no pressure or no stiff competition environment ) ...
N if u do not have the confidence n faith in the sch...Seriously, u may want to consider to transfer him out to a \"Top/Best sch\" as per yr definition...

If u have been reading this sub forum (n other threads)...i hv been mentioning that yr 1 is a \"honeymoon yr\", do enjoy the most out of it...

To be honest, i would be more worried if i put my child in a sch where the learning environment is kinda like a pressure-cooker... with constantly intense competition amongst peers...instead of enjoying the learning journey with a wide array of holistic prigrams awaiting for them...

          Anyway, to each his own...

To recap...below was what i posted 6 yrs ago, in 2009, here ...
Now, after 6 yrs...i can affirmly say that i have made the RIGHT decision ...
          No regrets !!!

          hi all

          i've submitted the S1 form.........
          1st choice : DHS 2 nd choice : NYGH

these few days, while i was trying to \"convince myself\" to put DHS as 1st choice, on the other hand, my gal was trying to please me (i know she's trying to please me) by saying, \"Mummy, if u want me to go NYGH, then NYGH lorr......\"

In the end, i go with her heart, by saying, \"Confirmed! DHS as 1 st choice\",
immediately i saw the gleam in her eyes......
i hope to see the continuity of gleams in her eyes down the 6 yrs...... ( YES, i see that ... 😄 )

              Hi

Aiya one day never logged in only and missed all these interesting posts by my seniors! Those were the memorable old days! Just confirmed with my Y3 nephew that 陈瑞如 老师 is still teaching in school now. Mdm Thia was also my chem teacher and Qiu Shen was discipline master. Mrs Lim was my maths teacher and form teacher in sec 3 and sec 4, her husband Mr Lim (tall lim) was the physics teacher. I never really love maths or believed I could do well in maths, but under Mrs Lim, I actually look forward to maths lessons! And a few others like my history teacher and my biology teacher. They actually made me look forward to school everyday as lessons were interesting and teachers very encouraging although I must say my results were quite bad then ( bottom of the class kind). If you ask me, I am really thankful that my teachers were encouraging and subscribe to the theory that nobody gets left out. Most important of all, they believe in me and gave me HOPE. Many a times, they pull me aside and told me that I can do it, clear one hurdle at a time and cheer me on. This helps a lot, especially later on in life when I face an obstacle, I always remember to take a rest, pause and try again, but NEVER give up, simply because I learnt to believe in myself just like how they had believed in me. To me, besides pushing for good grades, it is very important that a teacher believe in the student, give them a goal to work towards slowly and cheer them on, as it gives them HOPE. Under their guidance, my class did very well in O levels. In fact one third (10 of them) went on to clinch local and overseas scholarships later on and doing very well in government sectors and banks now but they are still very humble. And not to forget the friendship and now the kinship perhaps ( classmates who marry one another) that we shared especially during interclass competitions! Some of us are literally becoming friends for life! And to my juniors in DHS now, you cannot imagine how much we envy you now and wished that we could stay 2 more years in DHS back then and not having the headache to choose between VJC or TJC!

@Ernie yang, were you in table tennis team too?

@Betsy, my nephew also said speed will pick up in Y2 due to streaming and so forth. So not to worry. Also, with all our sharings above, I hope we have put your heart a bit more at ease too and believed that your son is in good hands. Besides academic excellence, I always think that a school should instill right values too ( like filial piety, combrade- ship etc), and in DHS, you get such a good packaged deal. But of course, the decision is still yours.

@current DHS students, maybe can share your stories here too?

Hi! I wasn't in the table tennis team. One of my close friends was and a few of us would sometimes go watch her practise. The teacher-in-charge I think was 张中兴老师。

Haha... I didn't end up in TJ or VJ too, although 90% of my class went to those 2 JCs.

Thank you to the alumni who have shared experiences.

I think the definition of a good school would really depend on the child. What kind of environment does he or she thrive in? Different schools have different programmes which aim to bring out the best in the students, even the TRP Programme in DHS. Besides being a mock-PW practice, it is also important to cultivate the skills needed to work in teams.

It is a good gauge but not fair to judge a school by the entry cut-off points as the academic rigour and demands of primary and secondary school are different. The former involves more \"studying and hard work\", and (I believe) quite a lot of pushing from parents. However, secondary school is really a time for students to learn how to manage the commitments that they have, and to explore what they like. And yes, many changes can occur during these volatile teenage years - some may collapse under the stress, some may face relationship problems (with friends or family). However, the late bloomers tend to thrive during this period of time. This is when they start understanding their own interest and passion and go all out to pursue them. Let me give you an example: these apply to all schools, not just DHS. I have a level mate who DSAed into DHS with 24+, but subsequently topped the level in his favourite subject (Maths). Even the president of current senior high student council actually appealed into DHS, but did very well (2nd in level) in Year 2. On the flip side, there is another case of a girl who DSAed and did well for GAT (close to full marks), but PSLE score 22+. Eventually got into BGR and eating disorder problems, and sunk. That is just the transition from Primary school to secondary school. Many changes can occur in the child's interest in school and in his or her social life. And at this age, teenagers get influenced by their friends a lot. This is where parents' support is crucial.

It was also mentioned that Year 1 academic rigour is not enough. If the definition of academic rigour is to have to go home and study until it is time to sleep, every day, then of course it is not rigorous. I think year 1/2 focusses more on non-academic development - CCA, computing, Appreciation of Chinese Culture (ACC). If the academic rigour of the normal curriculum is not enough, students are always free to go to the library, pick up a book on A level Physics and do some self-reading. There are so many options to explore and this cultivates a sense of ownership towards one's learning. If your child only learns because it is part of the curriculum, then there is little self-motivation involved. I have friends from the Raffles family who say that many students are constantly enriching themselves - reading more, doing more. This happens in DHS too, but not as common. It all depends on the individual's drive to learn and learn more.

However, I still think that Year 1/2 is the time for students to develop holistically - finding themselves, learning about their friends and having fun. The RELATIVELY non-competitive environment is to foster a culture of sharing. DHS encourages students to share their notes and work together, which is quite common between seniors and juniors. I say relatively uncompetitive because DHS is still a competitive place to be in. There are people vying to be at the top, but not many will outwardly express it. In fact, DHS promotes humility and support - if you do well, good for you, but be careful about how others feel. If you have not done as well, your friends understand how you feel and are willing to help you get there. The idea is: we progress together, no one gets left behind (as long as they are willing to seek help and work for it).

No school is perfect, but it depends on what you want in your child. When you look at people who come out of the school, look at who they are as a person. Trust the school you have sent your child to. Work with them to bring out the best in your child. :imcool:
