        MMM:

My ex-MBS classmate who is now HOD for one of the primary school told me that the key things that set the kids apart are those with/ without family support. Those with good family support tend to do better in school over time.
I'm from MBS too! My former classmate who's now teaching in a sec school also agreed with me that parental support is very important now, and that if we were to become kids again (but still with our parents uneducated and unable to help) we would not have done so well in today's schools.

Another friend, a primary school teacher, admitted that teachers have to \"go with the majority\" - as in: if the majority are fast learners with parental support, the teachers will teach at their speed.

Education is supposed to provide a level playing field for kids from different socio-economic classes, so that poorer families get a good chance to catch up. We can argue about equitability then and now, but I personally find that the inequitability is much more pronounced now than in yesteryears.

. Lastly, any information on English oral and LC?

          Please share.

Does anyone know what's exactly tested in the EL oral (15%)?

I look at the SA1 schedule and don't quite know what to expect for \"Reading & Picture Conversation\".

          Any help?

Got a reply from the EL tr:

\"The pupils will be given a little story booklet about 4-5 pages. They will be asked to talk about the picture/ predict what will happen in the next page before the examiner gets them to read. The pupils are familiar with this as we have been doing this in class with the big books since the beginning of the year. However, they need to remember to speak in full sentences. Meanwhile, you might want to get a simple story book and have your child practise on descibing the pictures and making predictions of the story.\"

            Hi Adbie,

Good to know that you are ex-MBS too. Think there are quite a number of us here. Do join the MBS alumni on FB.

Yes I agree with your comments. Having educated and engaged parents mean that we will try to find ways to expose our kids and help them to do better. This is not left entirely to the school and teachers. We also ended up doing SWOT analysis regularly on the kids to see how we can strengthen their weaknesses and eventually convert to a strength.

This is probably what \"uneducated\" parents cannot do (thinking of my parents' era). Their only message is that you must work hard so that you are not like us.... But on the other hand, such kids might have greater drive for success ? The top student in my girl's class during P1 and p2 came from a humble background. Think the father is a bus driver and mum is a housewife. But he managed to do well.

              it's 7 days trip, comprises of 30 students (for this trip 20boys & 10girls) + 4 teachers.

of which 4 days will be spent at shaolin temple, where they will learn martial arts fm the monks. at the end of the trip, MBS students will demonstrate to the monks their skill level  & there's a \"graduation ceremony\" cum maka session with honorable master(s).

other days they will visit temple, pagoda, mountains, bookstores etc ...

btw refer to http://mbsgoingplaces.blogspot.com/ for previous activities

This looks fun. Is it open to all the kids? Can parents tag along?
