Further Mathematics is back for the A Levels, and will only be offered as a H2 subject.

Looking at NJC's combi example for F. Maths, it looks like students taking this subject will be similar to the old A level double maths, physics, econs combi. (Although students have a choice to substitute chemistry for physics). 4 H2s.

Just being curious - why is MOE bringing back F Maths? Is there any benefit for the students? What courses in the Uni will need such combi? -
Extract from moe:
H2 Further Mathematics is designed for students who are mathematically-inclined and who intend to specialise in mathematics, sciences or engineering or disciplines with higher demand on mathematical skills. It extends and expands on the range of mathematics and statistics topics in H2 Mathematics and provides these students with a head start in learning a wider range of mathematical methods and tools that are useful for solving more complex problems in mathematics and statistics
from education minister:
I am pleased to announce that MOE will be introducing Further Mathematics as a H2 level subject in the A-level curriculum from next year. Students in JC1 in 2016 will be able to take up this subject. This will create more opportunities for our young to develop stronger interest and foundation in STEM. Further Mathematics will expose students to advanced mathematical concepts in areas like linear algebra, numerical methods and statistics, with a focus on knowledge construction and applications. Students will appreciate how the application of mathematics lies at the heart of modern innovations (e.g., internet search engines, machine learning and intelligent system, and financial modelling). I hope that students with the passion for mathematics will seize this opportunity to take the subject and achieve greater mastery in the pursuit of STEM.

And we need further math to bridge the gap for students going engineering, maths, or science. For instance, in engineering, students need to be strong in calculus. Knowing how to do solve 2nd order differential equation, finding arc length, integration using reduction formula, etc used to be covered in further math but not covered in h2 math. Without further math background, students will find it harder to grasp advanced engineering maths. With further math, picking up engineering math and getting a good honors degree in engineering will be easier. -
Is computer science also a new introduction to the A levels? Appears that we are heading back towards the A level offering of the past when Further Math and Computer Science were options.
-
could this re-introduction be due to lack of good engineers?
Mr.Khaw mentioned we need more engineers to tackle the transport problems. -
Unsure if F Maths or Comp Sc is a prerequisite for Engineering courses in NUS or NTU.

Haven't heard about Comp Sc as an H2. Yes, this is like my time - my husband did F.Maths and Comp Sc as 2 of his subjects! -

They were never prerequisites for university courses when they were offered in the 80s. Currently, they are not as F.Maths is only being offered from next year after a long break. Is Comp Sc going to be offered at H2 again? -

I saw it in the NJC link that someone posted earlier. And yes, I had friends taking the exact same combi as your husband, ie with FM and CS.jtoh:

Wonder will Comp Science replaces the current H2 Computing ?
