Hello!
We are a Finnish family who has just moved here for to stay for 9 months. We have a daughter who is going to turn 7 this week and a son who just turned 3. Our daughter speaks English (not perfectly), our son doesn't. We would like to find a local school for our daughter and a playschool for our son. We live in Maplewoods Condo, Bukit Timah Road. We are not that interested whether the school is one of the top schools. We just would like to give our children the opportunity to learn about Singaporean culture, get some local friends and learn more English etc.
For my daughter the nearest local school which has vacancies is Balestier Hill Primary. Does anyone have any helpful information about that school? Thank you for your time.
Any ideas for a playschool for our son? -
Hi karpai,
Welcome to Singapore! You may want to click on the following link to find out more about Balestier Hill Primary.

Hope it helps! -
Hi! My son studies there. It is single session and children need to assemble by 7.40am for silent reading. Lesson starts at 8am. The school is like a little United Nation with quite a number of foreigners, probably because it is not one of the so-called "popular" schools and it usually still has vacancies during the last registration phase. What do you want to know about the school?

Our daughter didn’t go to school in Finland, she would start next August. English isn’t her mother language either. I’m worried if she can cope with the teaching. Is there many exams? How are the teachers? Went there today, huge school! I bet it could get quite stressful for her in the beginning… She’s quite timid in the beginning, but very friendly when you get to know her. Quite sensitive also. Hopefully she would find friends… As I told, we are not that interested on the academic values, but more of getting a nice, warm and motivating experience for the kid.

Hi Karpai,
Do you mean start Primary One next August? I think it will be better to start in January when the new term starts, easier to integrate and make new friends and also easier to follow up on the academic courses.
The school’s academic standards are not very high and they focus a lot on basics in Primary One and Two. They have regular topical and spelling tests with little homework and after-school activities for lower primary levels. The teachers are ok, some very strict in discipline but don’t expect too much from them as I understand that they are tight on human resources. They also conduct parents-meet-teachers sessions after each term.
If you child is a keen learner, she should not face much issues academically. As I mentioned earlier, the students come from all walks of life and from various nationalities, so your child should be able to make friends quite easily. -
Actually we would like to start as soon as possible. I was very happy to read your reply and feel more confident about going into a local school. one problem is that we are staying in bukit timah so we have to start the day very early. but really didn’t find any school which would be near to us and have vacancies…
