        Dreamaurora:

        BMus/Ba -> MMus/MA -> Phd/DMA
CTABRSM -> DipABRSM Teaching -> LRSM Teaching -> FRSM Teaching

A typical BMus/BA recital would be at the level of LRSM/LTCL Performance, so having that certifies the teacher as being able to perform up to the level. MMus would be equivalent to FRSM/FTCL.
If DD is doing the ABRSM exams, does that means I should get a teacher with LRSM over BMus, as both are the same level and the former is ABRSM-related? How about LLCM? Is that the less recognised?

Can't compare a full time cert to private diploma certs lar, someone has gone through full time training will definitely be much more well-rounded than just a private diploma holder. Study piano full time must constantly give recitals and go for other classes such as harmony, history, chamber, etc. Whereas to prepare LRSM just have to prepare one recital, viva voce, and quick study, which can be prepared at student's own sweet time and no deadline.

LLCM is by London College of Music. It is equivalent of LRSM by LCM. I think it is debatable if LTCL and LLCM are less prestigious than LRSM, but the general consensus is it is harder to prepare and pass a Diploma by ABRSM.

            Hi Parents,

I’m looking for piano school for my DD who is 7yo.

Can anyone comment of MYC’s and Kindermusik’s teaching/teacher?

I have a keyboard at home and although my DD has never had any lesson, she is able to play a few songs on her own…and has finally asked for lesson. She seems interested in making songs of her own hence I thought of MYC which has a composition component in their lesson. Or does every school have that? Sorry, I have no background in music at all so I do not know.

            Thanks for your advise.

            Cheers!

              Dear all,

to celebrate my studio’s first successful DipABRSM in Music Performance result (which by the way was attained with Distinction by a fellow forumer here), I am offering promotional rate of 50$ per lesson for my Diploma lessons leading to DipABRSM in Music Performance or DipABRSM in Teaching. This rate will be in effect until end of June next year. Viva Voce and Quick Study are covered in my lessons as well, so you don’t need to source external lessons for them. Diploma candidates under my studio will be given ample performance opportunities and also masterclasses with other teachers; They will also join festivals and competitions.

Please feel free to contact me by PM if you have any further questions. Please note both DipABRSMs require completion of grade 8 ABRSM and for DipABRSM Teaching there is additional requirement of grade 6 Theory.

Is it ok for a 4 years old to start 1-1 piano lesson or is it better to start with programme like Cristofori MLM? Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

I posted here earlier, sometimes in end Jul, asking the above, & several people have responded to my query here & via pm, very grateful for that.

My girl can be quite attentive & sit through for a period of time. I brought her to Sound of Music last year, she will fidget a bit but not to the extent of making a big din, entertaining her with sweets here & there, & she managed to sit through the entire musical. She can sit quietly & watch a 40-50 minutes play without complaining. She attended other forms of enrichment classes & sat through an hour of lesson without crying or wanting to get out of the room. Hence, I don't think she'll have problem attending 1-1 lesson if I decide to do so.

I am a sahm, & hv learnt how to play piano when I was a child, but I stopped midway. Hence, if I do let my child to start 1-1 piano, I would be able to guide her for the initial years, well, I still know the basics with some revision, haha... However, I did not start her on 1-1, but instead opt for music appreciation class at the teacher's house, not with commercial schools. We have attended somewhat 10 lessons by now, & I never regret my decision to go with this particular teacher, even my hubby also sings praises of the teacher.

Having gone through learning how to play piano myself during my childhood days & looking at my girl now, I'm glad I have let her embarked on this fun music learning journey first. If I had such a teacher & gone through the same stage as my girl, I would probably have gone further with my piano learning journey. When I attend lesson with my girl, I enjoy it myself & as if, I'm reigniting my own piano learning journey. The teacher played music pieces & introduced the various instruments used to play the piece, taught to listen to different expressions or pace, like is it surprised, fast, slow, etc, etc, & taught how to catch the beats. I began my own piano journey just like going for another study lesson, learn, practise, sit for exam, so it comes to a time where I faced bottle neck when pieces, rhythm, catching the beats, etc, became harder & harder as I progressed up the grades, & eventually, I just dropped learning piano totally. This is something that I don't wish to see my girl goes through. I agree with some peoples' comment that it is good to build up a strong foundation before progressing to learn a musical instrument.

For now, my girl is enjoying every lesson, so much so that she asked to go for it everyday! My older boy did not display strong reaction to music like my girl does, she dances to songs when played during TV progs/adverts or listens to radio/CD, she repeats the songs that she learnt in childcare at home or she simply sings with her own lyrics & tune, or hums her own tune, sometimes she will reply to my question by singing. Hence, we think she has a potential in this area. However, we don't want it to be the case that it's merely just that we thought she has a flair or keen interest in this area but we were wrong in the end. Therefore, the current music appreciation class is also an avenue for us to assess if she really likes music before we decide what's next for her.

My daughter is 7 yrs old and with Yamaha group piano for 2 yrs. Yamaha signed her up for Grade 1 for Mar 2016 but her class will be disbanded due to students dropping out. We hope to find her a good affordable private piano teacher near Marine Parade area. We are not into exams but would like her to acquire enough to be able to enjoy playing. Grateful if parents in this area can PM or email me contacts and recommendations!
