All About Full-Time Maids

I would also want to report that my 80 year old neighbour was shouted at by her Indon maid Rodia yesterday. She was alone at home and her 85 year old husband is in hospital. When I met her downstairs my block, she told me she was depressed and when I asked her why, she said that her maid wanted to look for another employer (and she hasn't even finish her contract yet, still 6 more months to go) and had asked for an increment of $200. She has painstakingly trained the maid in Nyonya cooking as she herself is a good cook and now the maid wants to leave her even before finishing her contract. the maid is currently paid SGD450 being new to singapore, but now demanding to be paid SGD650. A $200 payrise. The maid lied to her that maids are paid $650 nowadays. (want to make my neighbour feel bad)
If not, she threatened to go back to her agent. I totally disagreed with the manner in which the maid has demanded for payrise and how she tried to mentally bully my neighbour into giving in to her demands thinking that they are old and unaware of things.
I advised my neighbour to be careful, seeing that there are maids who tend to bully old aged employers and even hurt them.
What would you have advised my neighbour? Should I call MOM to report this?
It makes me sick n fed up whenever I read stories of aged employers n young children being bullied by these maids.
Till now, there is more protection of maids vs employers.

With the age and husband hospitalized, the last thing one wants to deal with is maid issue. Has the couple tried calling the agent and tell them what happened? Get the agent to talk to the maid, it's only 6 months left. Tell the maid if the maid change employer now, it doesn't look good on her bio-data too. Work for another 6 months to give the employers time to look for a new one and with 2 full years experience, she will have better chance to request for higher salary with the new employer. Give the maid some \"hopes\" and \"benefits\" to look forward to. Just bide some time until the husband is better.

Hi all employers especially with young kids staying alone with the full-time maid... I guess you all surely cannot take this, but just want to share to raise awareness:

My boy is alone with the helper at home too...

I think this maid cannot keep. If she dares to shout at an elderly/employer in situation like this, it seems she is deliberately taking advantage and care less how the employer feels. -
Maybe she should tell the maid she should just go since she has found greener pastures. I think maid is just trying her luck. If it is true that she can get $650, she would have resign and not just tell your neighbour what she can get.

Thanks Ashana and Coolkidsrock.
Telling the maid to go is the right thing. Cannot keep because she shouted at the employer. Thinking they are weak and frail. My goodness. I wouldn't even want to pay $650 even if I can afford it if there is nothing much to do. Two old people totally mobile. eats very simple. hardly goes out little ironing to do. House spick and span no kids, no dogs, no dust.
It's the expectations that somehow agents and recruiters have put into the maids' heads. -

I think the maid care less to lose this job. Her exact motive is to get transfer. Even if your neighbor agrees to the pay increment, the maid will ask for more when she is unhappy again. Cannot keep her definitely but to find a more appropriate time to send her back.
When ready to send her off, if possible, get agent to send her straight to the airport to teach her a lesson. How dare she lie about the amount of pay others are getting and at situation like that.  -
Very sad to read so many unhappy incident with FDW. My sis-in-law just got 1 fresh inexperience Myanmar maid for 4 mths. We are living under 1 roof with her and my mum-in-law. Personally I found her very hard working and learning as much as possible with the very details and precise instructions to do very task. No off days, less than half hour to eat her meals, left over food for lunch from yesterday dinner, no rest in the day. She employed her to help takecare of her mother and herself. My life has no change as I still cooks, wash, do my own house chores by myself. I can't bare to add anything to her when seeing her with so much work from 7am till 10-11pm to wash and clean the house and endless amount of clothing. Now she requested to go back to her agent for transfer, well this is the 2nd time. 1st when she was 1 mth with us. The maid cries when she is scolded by my sis-in-laws (anyway there are 3 sis in total) with words like idiot, stupid... Keep on nagging for 10 mins and 5-6 times per day. When they called, she has to run else scolded for being slow. Things not clean enough will have to clean all over again. Resently, she told me she was abuse physically by one of them. Now she wanted to go, I really hope she can transfer to better 1 employer. Thing get worsen when they preferred to sent her home. She has not paid off her loan to them, I wondered what will happen to her? Will she ended up in debts when back to Myanmar, as air ticket, pass port and 1 month advance paid are provided to her before coming. Any one know what to do or whether she can come back again as a maid after being sent home like this?

-
Yes totally agree that this maid must go. In fact, let her go immediately/ASAP before more trouble brews. Just buy air ticket send her home. Let her learn e lesson of re-starting a hefty loan instead of letting her transfer. 1.5years is considered experienced already and agents will invent twisted half-truths to say why only 1.5years. So she will still get higher pay if she transfers? Varies agent to agent.
Agree that this topic on full time FDW is still considered v sensitive issues to b published in news? Itβs something akin to "racial harmony"? So this disrupts that so no1 would really dare to publish unless itβs a court case? Everything else is just opinions?!
