Well about property (investment or purchase)…1 shouldn’t buy so blindly…I know a lot of people bought properties blindly especially during the peak like 2007 (eg.2000 psf in river valley area in the 2007)…well even if the property market is trending upwards…u shouldn’t buy at a higher price than whats already been transacted…you buy at transacted psf and current prices not just for that development but around the area…some1 mentioned about the 80s…well my family bought a landed house near orchard at 300/400k and it en bloc about 05/06 if I remember correctly and the developments there is now Sg’s most expensive district psf…can one even find a landed freehold property for 1m now, not to mention orchard area…the replacement property also bought in 05/06 also went up many fold since then…that was so close to 07…even if u were to buy in 07 it would have went up many fold…so the moral of the story is to do your homework & not buy blindly…a lot of pple went into the market in 07 thinking as long as its property in a decent or good location, it will sure to make money but it all boils down to PSF…i wouldn’t even say quantum but PSF…the property agents will try to convince you that quantum is more imp than psf but that’s isn’t the case…yah property isn’t as liquid so hold on to enough cash to tide through a rainy day…well that’s same goes for stocks…no1 will keep an entire portfolio of stocks just for retirement (which obviously needs to be quite considerable for retirement) n not have any cash savings…

Only stocks? How about other investments?

            superduper:

What sort of grant does MOH provide for doing overseas med school? Care to provide more details?
NONE. That is why even the president scholarship only offer those doing medicine to pursue their MBBS locally at NUS

Stocks and a mixture of cash in short term accounts, and preference shares, bonds if they are attractive.

Its owning listed businesses which are cash flow generative, and what I am able to understand at acceptable valuations.

Even the MOH Holdings Pre-Employment Grant may seem quite difficult to get. And it's only catered for the last year of an MD and last 1 or 2 years (subjective) of an MBBS; not much of savings, the whole medical degree course fees for full fee paying international students is still highly substantial and beyond reach of ordinary folks.

The point in question is; is it really worthwhile to wipe out parents' potential future retirement funds to pay for the substantial international fees and living expenses for at least 4 to 5 years of overseas medical studies?

One can take loan for Education. But no one will loan you money for Retirement 😢

The point is : cannot say don't have anything besides president's scholarship. And I am sure it is easier than getting a president scholarship. Though the tenure is shorter. Period.
