Generally, the results will fluctuate quite a bit when the kids reach P5... 10% drop is highly possible. Many band one students might score 70-75 during CA1 and even SA1. For my case, my girl managed to do better, or I would say performed up to her normal standard until SA2.Thank you parents for sharing.
10% drop per year is a lot, this is really frightening. Please don't!
..
Can we have 5% improvement instead?!
Unfortunately no, my girl was not selected for the prefect interview. Oh, do you mean at end of P4, there is another selection? My DD was a hall monitor in P1 to P2 but not selected. Maybe her results dropped so cannot be one. Apart from good character, I think prefects need to be all subjects band 1 type. My DD has 2 subjects with band 2. Need to work harder next year.
I agree with lionqueen that many monitors are not chosen. In fact, my DD was so sure that her current class monitor will be selected but surprisingly no although the teachers always praise the boy's work.
When compare with other top schools, I think our school papers (except Chinese) are considered easy already.
Some schools set ridiculously difficult questions so that parents feel stress, must send their children to TLL for enrichment. I think it's better life to be teachers in those schools.. teach less and the kids automatically know because of enrichment. Unlike our school, teachers stay back to give compulsory remedial from P3.
Can we opt out for HCL in P4 or P5? As my daughter dislike Chinese, I am thinking of just letting her do normal Chinese so she can have more time for other subjects. Someone told me before unless the child wants to go to a SAP secondary school, the additional HCL points are useless, very difficult to score distinction too so it is not worth it to spend too much time on Chinese.
Yes can opt out from HCL. Until now I still don't quite understand what's the difference between CL and HCL...except that my girl can score 85.5% for her CL but a 60% for HCL. But I will let her continue with HCL because I foresee she will need that subject in sec school ... -
Hi Callie, is there oral, listening compre and composition component in HCL paper or just purely paper 2?
I think it is really difficult to do well in HCL. I feel the normal chinese paper is already very tough, let alone HCL.
Nevertheless, as long as your DD is able to cope, no harm continuing.

you have a pair of twins at same level? That will be so stressful. I have 1 at P4, and another P1..i'm always with the P4 all the time..and the P1 will be \"cast\" away..with assessment bk, and papers..and I train her to mark her own papers also..Muska,
Not easy at all isn't it..i am bracing myself for the disappointment these few days, especially when one child is possibly likely to remain in top 3, while the other in the same level is most likely not. Sometimes, it's a irony that mummies tend to focus more efforts on the weaker one, and end up, the perceived better one starts to suffer...and must add a disclaimer that both my kids are not the motivated kind at all, so definitely mummy works harder than them, hahaha...
Probably will try my luck to ask their teacher and see what comes back...during the mid-year PTM, the teacher was rather open about sharing the class mean scores...so let's see. -
Callie,
personally I find HCL paper is far more difficult to score than CL paper.
For CL paper, usually kids do pretty well for the 1st part, mcq, hypy, but lost marks at comprehension. Then again comprehension doesnt form a big part of marks in CL. So most parents (like me) just let kids try their best on comprehension…and major marks lost for the whole paper still limited mainly to compre only.
Then when it come to HCL, if its a 60 marks paper, 40marks are from comprehension, and 20 marks from the cloze/identify wrong word. Each of the comprehension answer, if its 4marks question, teacher would expect to see 4 points…and many kids tend to identify only 2 point or sometimes lesser…
I always remind my ds to at least fill up the lines given, so not so much marks are being lost. N remind him to at least look at the marks for the question, to identify how many points is needed. So marks hv improved since…
of cos it doesnt work all the time…but at least showed that he has tried his best for the question for me at least, So that I wont scold.
This SA2, there’s 1 ques which he only managed to fill half the lines, yet get fullmarks…so he came hm, and showed off…See teacher only looking for "2 key words" hah. Dont need to write so much. -

Personally, I think every single improvement counts, so dont set yourself a limit like P4 must be at 90% cos at times it will only stress urself up..and maybe panic for more tuition.97% for top 3?? My goodness, these children are amazing! Most of them will probably be taken by GEP schools next year.
My DD is nowhere close. I wonder if a child results dropped by 10%, e.g. From 97% in P2 to 87% in P3, is it still possible to improve to above 90% in P4? However, mummy does not really know what caused the dropped, even though she has tuitions. I find it's difficult to score high for languages as they are too many components that constitute to the 100%.
sean wife, I totally understand how you feel as I am in the same shoe as you. Actually i wanted to out source the teaching to the private 1-to-1 tutor but i heard only bad things about private tutors, good ones are teaching at reputable learning centres. Too difficult to find a reliable and qualified tutor.
actually, what is the most effective way to teach the kids? Revise textbooks everyday base on topics taught, do assessment book or do top schools papers? I need to reorganize the teaching which does not shows results now.
i am so worry that I might end up with postnatal depression after my delivery in Mar.
At higher pri, The languages subj is probaly gonna lose more marks due to more diff papers, and compos. So to be able to well for language, I guess hv to put some focus on oral too (despite paper/compo). In PSLE, oral for chinese is probaly 40marks, and compo is also 40marks for CL. It will be much easier to score oral than compo, imo.
In order to do well for overall average, math is probaly the only paper thats easier to achieve 90s/or even fullmark.
For me, when teacher teach a topic, eg Math angle, i will let ds do assessment book for the topics. N past yr paper will only comes in 2wks or less(during revision) before the actual paper. N if I found out that he is weak in certain topics, I will find all related/challenging question to test him till he is better than me.
Hope that helps.. -

Yes, seems a common phenomenon to focus on the elder child, while the younger one is left to own device…unfortunately it can’t work for my case…so when people often comment ‘how lucky to have twins…’, I often beg to differ. I guess it’s not so bad when the kids are motivated, unfortunately mine don’t really fall into that league….so double/triple the stress. I toggle between doing work with them separately (which is more peaceful for everyone, but not time efficient) and separately (which means more quarrels, fighting…so end up may not be much more time efficient) …I guess at some point, need to lower expectation to match their willingness on how hard they want to work, isn’t it?

Yup, you are spot on…although both managed to remain in top 3 this year….to my surprise actually. The one that didn’t do well this year is actually the more ‘intelligent’ one in my view. On-off, this is also the child that I have heard comments from her teachers that she may go GEP etc etc. But common feedback is also that she can has potential to do much better if she is more focused. I rather both stay in the same school than having to manage the logistics, scheduling, support nightmare I need to go through. But frankly speaking, I doubt both of them are in the GEP league…each year probably less than 5 qualify? Nah, they are not that kind of highly-motivated kids that enjoy highly challenging work…in fact at some point in time, I suspect they have some traits of ADHD…not focused, active, dreamy at times…quite a pain to teach actually. Can do a few questions and stop to read their books kind… -
sean wife,
You can request for transfer for the 2nd twin, but to go same sch, although no promise, but certain centre like NYPS might be too full though.
For centre near TPY n suitable for gal, probaly only NYPS? RGPS might be too far.
So for my case, I didnt try my luck for the P1. N sent the P4 to a boy sch Centre.
Sometimes they get dreamy/not focus, can be due to things r too easy w the current work. My P4 no longer dreamy, cos quite bz all the time…sometimes even after I reach hm in the evening, still havent finish his hw.
You can PM me if you are interested to know more if you want to take up the offer. -
I have Primary 2 brand new 好公民课本 and lightly used Shaping Maths textbooks for sale.
Please Pm if u r interested
