Asked PM today and he don't even know(???!!!).
I have found out how to calculate the Interim GPA from the PM.
I find the practice of using the grade value very unreliable becos the Grade is spread over a range of marks (eg A+ is > 84.5%). Two students each with a A+ could be one lower end, the other upper end. But the GPA is still the same for both. -
Jennifer:
I find that this GPA system is better than my eldest daughter's MSG system, though it may be \" unreliable \". Well, they have to adapt to this kind of grading systems, this kind of \" too bad \" system where you may just be one mark below an A but you still get the marks for B.

Just a side note, NJC has a boarding programme. Rather attractive factor, that made me put it as 2nd choice. But NYGH's affliated to HCI (college section) and has people from affliation (so she won't fall to the back of the cohort).Oh I see
By the way, my niece is not sure which school ( NY / NJC ) is better for her. I advised her to try out the DSA for both and see how, but she wants an answer. After speaking to my children, she is still caught in between the two choices.
Any advice for her? She is a vibrant, cheerful and rather outspoken girl. No preference as to sec / co-ed, but sis in law prefers co-ed as she thinks gina needs to learn how to communicate with boys, but my bro in law values billingualism. She does fairly well, normally top 5 in class. So... I'm not sure what to tell her and she demands an answer!

NYGH has its 2010 open house banner put up. I think I saw 22 May. -
I spoke to the LA teacher about whether we should be making reading newspaper a habit, his response seems to indicate that the students are still at a young age to be interested in reading newspapers. I bou up the issue of other IP schools making subscription to Times mag a compulsory for its students and that I think the articles are quite dry. Again, he seems to agree that JH1 students need not start reading Times now. Though encouraged, not reading so does not hurt too much either. Throughout the curriculum, the students would be slowly introduced to different forms and learn to form their own perspectives. Seems to me that NJC allows its students to grow up at a more natural rate. In the end, the students would still be prepared for GP.
And, this year LA first module is made more difficult compared to last year where many students scored A+. -

Wah, your girl so clever.
If my daughter did not get a B+ for art she could have gotten into the deans list! Anyway, her marks are only 3 marks from a B+ to an A!!!

I remember the time when I was in Sec One, I miss by 3 marks to get into Bins List.

N/B: Principal said Bins List are those who got marks fit for the Dustbins

The GPA system is commonly used in American Universities. But I supposed there is no \"BEST\" system. Is adding up all the raw marks a fair system ? Of cos not ...
I find that this GPA system is better than my eldest daughter's MSG system, though it may be \" unreliable \". Well, they have to adapt to this kind of grading systems, this kind of \" too bad \" system where you may just be one mark below an A but you still get the marks for B.
This interim report is only a guide .... doesn't mean a student getting GPA 3.61 is better than a student getting a GPA of 3.60. Similarly, does a student getting 271 in PSLE is better than the one getting 270 ?
But what the Principal at NJC, Ms Virgina Cheng said today is correct. She asked parents not to compare with other's parents. No student is the same. Some student are stronger in maths & science but some are stronger in languages ....
She said the aim of NJC is to produce 200 different students of higher ability & NJC is not a factory of producing clones of just straight As students.
She also said that she don't want students to compete with each other but rather help each other and she also instructed her teachers not to ask the students to compete with each other. She said she showed all the JH1 students a graph showing how each of the 8 classes fare among each other so that if they know one of the class is not doing well, all the classmates in that class should help the weaker students in the class so that the average GPA of the class is up. Helping each other is the way to go ....
Kudos to Virginia Cheng & NJC !! -
This is also my first experience on how GPA is being computed. Agreed that each grade do have a wide spread in the range, perhaps looking at the subject percentile would give you a better feel of how your child fair in the cohot.
Funny enough the hall was twice on black out when I was there in the late afternoon.
I missed the principal talk today, anything worth sharing? TIA.
