However, in the context of the passage, one may be better then the other.
Vocabulary:

Is it \"finally\" or \"always\"?
***\"finally\" is my pick
dawned means coming to a realisation
always means a constant non-changing state
so they don't go with each other.

\"finally dawned\" vs \"always been aware\"

The two words may seem similar but they are not quite.
\"understood\" is \"to know now what you didn't know before\"
\"realised\" is \"to know now what you thought was the opposite, in terms of opinion/belief etc\"
So previously, the companies didn't think it was important but now they have come to realise it is.
