ChiefKiasu - maybe you could consider steering your kid towards another music instrument since he has perfect pitch and piano background. More uncommon things like the French Horn or Clarinet would be cool...
I played the clarinet for 6 years... not by choice, but because that's the only instrument I can make some sound out of in the school band. As you said, it is uncommon. I felt like an old man everytime I played it, and the huge lump I get on my right thumb from having the entire weight of the instrument resting on it makes an interesting conversation piece. -

Chief, you should share \"old man\" clarinet stories with sashimi. :lol:
Besides clarinet, isn't percussion even easier to make sounds with. So how come you ended up with clarinet and I with percussion? :? -

i guess i wasn't consider a good-looker too (i was way underweight :roll:) and was transferred to play the clarinet after the first year.
off topic, but chiefKS...you really can assemble a KSP-band ensemble! -

You skinny then, too? Before I became what I am now, I was like a bamboo too. Maybe they only choose skinny people as clarinetists. It makes sense, though. Can you imagine yourself marching while lugging a baritone? I could just fall in and get lost inside.
I was never good at the clarinet, though. Took me 3 months before I could reach that high C. But the grossest thing was how after every practice, we had to pull out the mouthpiece to flick out all the evidence of our hardwork
. Nothing compared to the amount of saliva the French horn guy can pour out, though :!:

Er, I know I’m going waay off-topic liao. Sorry.
I only played in orchestra so no marching. I was skinny so I think the conductor was having doubts as to whether I could even lift the cymbals (not the light, thin french cymbals hor, but the heavy, thick german ones).
And sashimi not skinny, no way. So that upsets your theories, jedamum and Chief. -
Lol... it's ain't all that bad la... It's pretty fun, depending on who is teaching you. Besides, there's no effort without hard work (and a lot of saliva!)
It's a good way to train discipline though. If you can sit at band practice for 3 hours, you can sit and do your homework for 3 hours :lol: -

Ah... my mates and I have no problems sitting an entire day for band practice, not because we are good at doing homework or have good discipline, but because we have a really cute band instructor. :love: I get to sit in front some more with the woodwind section

Ehhhhhhh..... I also picked up the clarinet not-by-choice. I was a 笛子player from sec 3 to JC2. Then someone in SAF blur posted me to the (marching) bands, where, after telling the captain \"No sir, I play the Chinese Flute, not the Western Flute\", he told me to go learn the clarinet. Actually on hindsight, maybe I should have asked for the French Horn....
I don't miss the thumb either.
