My son is not enjoying SJI so far. Lessons have commenced and it doesnt help that all his other friends are having fun at orientation this week. I really hope we picked the right school for him :xedfingers:

So far so good for my DS. He is impressed that his teachers know his name by now and he is enjoying the classes so far. Only grouse is long briefings, so many dates and times to remember he says oh plus he doesn’t understand why can’t just wear PE attires to school on PE days 'cos it’s troublesome to change.

no idea either but i'm guessing its for placement into one of the CCAs under Performing Arts? places in sports are limited.. most slots already allocated to those that got into SJI via DSA sports

Good news must share and encourage each other. The first batch of IB boys from SJI produced stellar result for their IB exam.


\"At St Joseph's Institution, its first batch of 76 IB diploma students scored an average of 39.4 points.\" - fantastic result and all the boys deserve a pat on their back for job well done (100% passing rate)

Other stats:
Global average: 29.94
National average: 36.43 (well done every IB students who took IB exam in Singapore)
Perfect scorer - 66 students out of more than 2000 students from SG (up from 43 the year before)
ACSI average: 41.3 (449 students took IB exam, 34 perfect scorers)
Sota average: 38.89 (112 students with 26 students scoring at least 42 points - well done)

Well done SJI, well done teachers and management. Looking forward as my boy go thru the process, from ah boy to gentleman.

Congrats to SJI; but they still need to do more and more. compare to the ACS(I). Yah we can argue 1st batch.. but this should not be the main reason of argument. Even 2015 batch (result on 5th Jan 2016) was ok, but again far far away from ACS(I). All students were in in JC1/S5 with good cut off point, which means intake was with all the good calibre students same as ACSI. But the outcome is not same. The school team must work for excellence to catch or compare with ACSI.

1) Since it is 100% passing rate, no one has gone below 24 points.
2) Considering that this is the first batch taking the IBDP exam, I believe the lowest score of the batch is immaterial
3) ACSI has been running the program since 2005, about 8 years more experienced than SJI. From this perspective, I think the school has done exceptionally well with the first batch and we should only expect better news in the future.

I don't fully agree with you. It is immaterial whether 1st batch or 2nd batch. You have all the prime students in your batch. You need to mould them to get the best outcome. To mould them you need to have very good teachers who are very very expert on IBDB. We can't play with our buys life - like trail session; our boys can't be guinea pig. MOE should have done this and arrange exchange between ACSI and SJI as both offering IB curriculum under MOE though they are independent/autonomous.

qns: for this in the IP program, how does the CCA bonus points work? students won't need the bonus points for o-levels ...

Saw a similar question asked in other thread and am surprised that this is asked as I the school has gone thru it several times. SJI (and in fact almost all schools) looks at the holistic development of each child. While the boy MIGHT NOT need to go through O Level if they are in IP track, academic results is not everything there is in SJI. Also, in the worst case scenario, what if they cannot make it in IP and need to move onto O level track? Not something that has never happened before. The school also look at the character, leadership and skill development of each boy and opportunities and awards are given accordingly.

If anyone is asking this question for your DS, pls tell them that CCA is a commitment and an important of life in SJI. If you are asking this as a parent, I hope it do not negatively influence your DS as they will soon grow to be a man and textbooks is not everything. Instead, ask them to think seriously and commit to it. I like one thing that was shared during the parent orientation brief. Each boy will be able to put in 6 choices for their CCA, and any of the six choices might be something that they can go 'tahan' with for the next 4 years.

Parent 1: Seeking opinions from parents with boys in all-boys schools. First week in Sec 1, before even going thru' orientation, boy was asked to \"drop 20\" by comp studies teacher. Just because they were going thru step by step to log into their personal email accounts, & the boy clicked on an email in his inbox \"orientation matters\". Teacher shouts at boy & punished him to \"drop 20\". I understand it's normal punishment in all-boys schools, but was it necessary to do it on the first week in Sec 1? First time meeting the teacher & for such a minor \"wrong-doing\"? Wouldn't shouting & reprimanding suffice?

Parent 2: Didn't want to name the school. But it's SJI. The other parent messaged me as well. Her son is also going through a tough time in the school. We agree that they are running a military camp.


Parent 3: In fact I am also very much concerned about the school environment. I had been few times in the school and talked & observed few senior students. I also visited other schools such as ACSI, RI, HCI and NJC.
My observation is quite concerning. I feel SJI do something and their system does something with the students - and they finally becoming like a doll/robot. SJI may be wants the boys to be gentlemen. But finally these boys become robot, always keep their head down, unable to stand up properly with chest up!! This is really concerning me once I see the senior boys.
Whereas in other school boys are so open and cheer up and lively - they are growing on their own.
In SJI the school's military system doesn’t allow the children to raise their own. The kids are always on pressure - don't do this or only do this! I am very much concerned about it.

Parent 1: True. Whereas in schools like RI, you see very impressive boys who carry themselves very well. Outspoken & shows leadership qualities. Whereas the few student leaders I spoke to on registration day at SJI, they seemed so timid & unsure. One even stuttered when we asked him a question.
