Is it more cost effective to rent pocket wifi there in Japan or buy sim card from here? I thought I read from this forum most would prefer to buy the prepaid sim here. I have a family of 5 with individual device and phone so I thought pocket wifi is more cost effective.

You can rent a pocket wifi in Japan also. I believe the rate of $8/day is promo - not sure if there be such. My friend bought a sim card when she was in HK (I think HKD50) and it worked but she couldn't hotspot the rest of us. Can you get prepaid card in Japan? These tend to be cheaper incountry.

Note that if you have pocket wifi, everyone must be near each other all the time else they will lose connectivity - and then battery draining is an issue, pocket wifi drain fairly fast. That said, having pocket wifi was a pretty good homing device in bigger stores like Tokyu Hands or Uniqlo (I turned on my wifi and knew when my friends were near when I could see their wifi).

                    MummyJune,

Are you talking about the leak that happened due to the tsunami that took place a few years ago?
If so, my suggestion is ~ how about avoid that area altogether? Many other very beautiful places in the southern side to visit โ€ฆ Okinawa, Matsuyama in Shikoku, Osaka, etc. Okinawa may be a little โ€˜uluโ€™, but itโ€™s really unique and beautiful!

Frankly, no one has the answer for you. There are still people living there, not only Tokyo but at Fukushima area. I still go to Japan, although I do not go near Fukushima. Many people are still travelling to Japan. There are also many others who won't go. You have to decide for yourself. No one can decide for you.
