randwick:
if it is the school's past year exam paper, i would definitely want her to do properly...that would be an indication and revision for the real CA.
Depends on whether the homework is school worksheets or revision papers. If they are papers, for me, I treat as revision but must do properly. More important is DD's attitude. No point so many papers and not constructively done.janet88:
Mummies,
If your kids have a lot of homework from school, how do you ensure they are ready for tests/exams since it would be 'cruel' to add any more revision? Your advice is appreciated. -
janet88:
Ikr.some ridiculous work would be to do some project for social studies...this is really dumb  project at this time and girls have to meet after school??? no way! last month, the teacher asked the girls to write an article...1000 words :siao: if this craziness continues, i will have to write in.
since this is a crucial year, and with 6 months plus to go, i will see how to reschedule her daily work. since not using DSA. a pass will do for next week's CA1.
During my ds time, his teacher only had 1 soc studies lesson for the entire p6 yr. Ya it was only one. The rest of ss lesson was used for EMSC. -
ilovelaksa:
social studies was just the teacher yakking...what nonsense is this about project work and 1000 words?

So Janet, what is your DD’s exam time table like? How you planning her revision? Hopefully, no homework during exam week.

monday 29/2 english, 1/3 math, 3/3 science.
we've been doing ca1 past year papers...good form of exposure to questions set by different schools...and yes, hopefully no school homework from monday to thursday so that we can go through mistakes made. -
janet88:
How come your dd does not need to take mt?

my daughter is exempted from MT.

janet88:
So with the exemption, the total T score for your dd will be prorated? How does it work?

no idea...if the principal doesn't know how t score is calculated for 3 subjects.
How does it work? -
Reading posts from Janet and ilovelaksa…
I totally agree that on the week of exams and even week before, they should stop giving papers. Doing more papers is NOT REVISION. Consolidating existing knowledge and going through previously attempted ( & corrected!!!) papers focusing on mistakes is revision. I have sometimes written to the teachers to inform them that my child will not be doing papers given during exam week. I must say that doing so has never adversely affected their results.
Schools seem to be giving conflicting messages to parents & children. On the one hand, they want revision to be seriously ramped up because of PSLE. On the other hand, they want the kids to continue their non-examinable projects and CCAs in a sense giving the message that everything else doesn’t stop for PSLE.
Two things I always, always, always wonder about schools (primary and secondary):
1) Do they know that there are only 24 hours in a day? On some days , it is totally impossible to finish the work that is given and still get enough sleep and rest. I know for a fact that many kids forgo sleep in order to get all their work done. This is downright unhealthy and if the schools think that tiring kids out is the way to excellent PSLE results, they really need to re-think their strategy.
2) Do teachers communicate with each other? Because some days , the kids come home with homework from every subject teacher. Wouldn’t it be more efficient and effective if their homework was spaced out?
Holistic education is more than heaping all sorts of activities on kids. It’s also about ensuring the these activities and lessons take place in a coordinated manner that benefits the child.
