[PSLE MT] PSLE less weightage in Chinese / Mother Tongue

OMG..... I reside to Singapore as I want my children to have better education especially for CL. :? We even asked help from a great private tutor and thank God, my children are improving so much within these 4 months. They are striving to be move to a better MT class in their school next term.

If they reduced the weightage to 25%, think the students weak in CL will get weaker cos they will think 'what the h**k, why must improve since not so important anymore'.

I don't want that to happen, bc my p5 boy is better in chinese! And he is not even in that \"certain group of non-singaporean\" nor \"singaporean import\". He's a true-blooded singaporean, born here, and to an English-speaking family background.

My dd too. Truely Singaporean, English speaking at home, like chinese, good (i wont say excellent) in both eng & chinese. I give credits to her school teachers. It also takes quite a bit fair of effort from hubby, my mum and me throughout these years to cultivate her interest in chinese. I am sure all other family can achieve that too.

We didn't really cultivate it bc we are poor in chinese ourselves, and dh doesn't even know much chinese.

This boy is actually poorer in english , unlike your dd. He started reading firstly in chinese too when he was 4yo.

the existing weighting is 25%.

if they reduce it, it will be less than 25%

I showed my kid the news article about the proposal to reduce MT’s weightage


the INSTANT reaction is "Unfair !"

The comment is : "in every cohort, there will be people who find MT tough, Math tough, Science tough, English tough. And if the PRC students in Singapore can master English in a short time, why can’t Singapore students master Chinese language in the same time ?" that is the retort !

The rationale (and the spirit) is : if they can do it, so can we! Why change the system to weaken ourselves further ? that is the reasoning from my P6 kid

Education Minister Ng Eng Hen says his ministry is studying whether it is educationally sound for mother tongue language performance to count for so much at the Primary 6 level.

'The worry is whether it could exclude someone from progressing in his educational pathway even if he did well in other subjects,' said Dr Ng in an interview with The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao.

every year there are students who find the weightage too high for math / science / eng / chn. Why only reduce the weightage of chn ? why not reduce the weightage for eng / math /sci too ? there are many heartlanders' kids struggling with eng, and all the tuition centres for math testifies that math is a great challenge to many students too, likewise for science.

MOE should get more and better train chn teachers to do the job instead of keep lowering the chn standard until it is a joke !

as it is now the chn standard is already so low : compo only require 100 words! what kind of compo is this ? short message only, or just a long sms !!


pupils at P6 level should be able to write up to 500 to 1000 words

I really think this is bad for the development of Chinese. Already a lot of people do not see the importance of learning the language, now it will be worse. Why spend so much time on a lower weightage subject? Singaporeans are pragmatic people, all of us will know how to maximise our returns for every hour spent.
