After my kids exams, the teachers want to "skip" grades for them. They are now in Grade 4 and Grade 3. My kids are not the very musically talented type. Their theory are almost all distinctions (they have been taking every grades) but practical exams are mostly merit or high pass. Hence, it is recommended to skip grades? or should I just ask the teacher to go slow and teach them grade by grade? Is there any grade which is recommended not to skip? Please advise.

The music teacher should know better. Grade 5 and Grade 8 are must for practical. Grade 5 for Theory is a must, you'll need it to take any pratical exams higher than Grade 5.

There are plenty of learners around the world who do not take every graded music exam. For example, when I was an undergrad, most of my Indonesian schoolmates took grade 8 ABRSM as their first ABRSM exam. One did not even take her grade 8 but was already playing Diploma level pieces by the time she entered. Singapore statistically has one of the largest amount of ABRSM graded exam candidates, but interestingly when it comes to the number of Diploma graduates, Indonesia has more each year. This probably shows that the learning is very exam-oriented right from the start in Singapore, but far fewer students actually get serious beyond grade 8.roxanne_weir:

Learning music for interest is very important … it is this love that push the kids to continue…
